Handheld GPS question

I have a question about my little GPS Pilot III--

Is there anywhere on the device which tells me my altitude? For the life of me, I can't find anything. It has a Vertical Navigation Function, so it must have a way of determining a 3-D location. Obviously, I'm not looking for something perfectly accurate, but just to put me at a fixed point in space.

What am I missing?

Very possible, but what I'm really interested in is the readout of present altitude that you referred to. Do you have the same Garmin model that I do? I just can't find that readout anywhere, and I've read the manual over and over and can't find the answer.
