Hello all. I am planning a flight into Greenbrier Valley Airport (KLWB ) in mid-March. Can anyone give any guidance on how it is to fly into there? Any places in the area that we should visit or fly over/around? We are spending a few days at the resort there.

Thanks,

Dave

I used to fly into there with the airline I flew for years ago. Terrain, lots of it. Probably be pretty windy in March and turbulent w/ all those hills as the aerodrome lies in a valley of sorts.

The only thing I know of is the resort. Go do the bunker tour if they still offer that. Others will be along with more ideas. Have fun, beautiful area.

Yea, awesome resort. Nice golf course and the bowling alley is cool. Can't remember much aside from that lol

There is an introduction to Falconry course that is offered there - something that's fascinated me - but WAY too much time commitment to go full in.

Flying in there def be prepared for bumps if it's windy. I've only flown in there once was on the ground for 20 minutes.
Depending on which direction your coming from you can fly over Richwood or Summersville Lake. Not very exciting this time of year but is gorgeous in the fall.
If your up for a beautiful drive though, Marlinton is probably an hour away Cranberry Glades is nice to walk around. Cass Railroad is drivable but again, this time of year probably not much going on. Even further is Durbin and Green Bank radio telescopes. But that would be quite a drive for one day most likely.

But I'd say there is enough at the Greenbrier to keep you busy.

Not too far away is the Homestead. They had a "Scottish" golf course there. The airport at HSP is a leveled off mountain top. Saw a V22 last time I stopped.

There is a bit in town near The Greenbrier. Not much, though as I recall a couple of B&Bs and antique shops. The Greenbrier is the main attraction and is a nice resort.

The other thing that's a bit of a drive but not too far is the New River Valley gorge.

Don't forget that bunker for the fat cats in Wash DC! Not used for that purpose now but I think they offer a tour thru it. It was built under the hotel so in the event the USA gets attacked the fat cats are evacuated to Greenbrier, survive the event, and live for the future! The rest of us, not so much, on our own. :dunno::D

We will be planning to fly in from Ohio (I19). I'm a little familiar with bumps but not wanting to ride a rollercoaster all the way in. We will be in an Archer so not a heavy plane for turbulence.

Where in Ohio do you fly from?

Thanks,

Dave

We have the bunker tour on the agenda. I'm definitely a history buff. I think their dress code may not let me out in public too much.

Thanks,

Loved croquet when I was younger. Great back yard BBQ & beer drinking game.

People think it's a nice game. Hah! Little do they know!

If you have never played it on a really nice lawn, it's a special treat. Their croquet courts are as flat as a billiards table, with grass like a golf green. Impressive. You can legitimately try to hit another ball from 30 yards or more. We had so much fun playing. My wife was five months pregnant at the time, and it was a fun alternative to the skeet shooting activity that we weren't able to do due to her "condition."

They also have a very small casino. It's decorated in the Dorthy Draper style, and worth checking out for that reason, although I don't think it's for serious gamblers.

I am out of HTW or HTS Huntington WV. Right at the bottom of the state.

Very nice airport. I have flown in there many times. Great fuel prices recently too. There is a great restaurant on the field as well. fyi, It's not at the Greenbrier resort, so plan on getting a rental car if you plan on going there.

We are planning on getting a rental car as the price for the shuttle from the resort will more than pay for the car.
