Hi all,
There have been a lot of questions about good strips to visit, camp at, etc. - and that is just the kind of information that I'm trying to accumulate and share on my web site - shortfield.com.

So, please consider visiting the site and sharing information about your adventures at grass strips, backcountry destinations, airplane camp sites, etc.

The site is built around an FAA database which is also being amended with 'uncharted' strips, and local pilot knowledge about the strips. You can search on an airport and then share PIREPs, pictures, videos, or help write the description in a wiki format. If enough people participate, we should have a pretty good tool for answering questions like "what grass strips in the NE are good for camping, fishing, etc?".

Happy landings,
Chris

I admire your motivation and plan for your website, but I have to ask: How does/will your site differ from adventurepilot.com?

Well, I think there is/will be some overlap with the adventure pilot site and several of the many sites that provide airport information, pilot forums, etc. Some of the main differences are/will be that shortfield.com is focused on less-traveled airports, backcountry airports, uncharted airports, and airplane camping.

I started the site in 2000, put it on hold for a while, and then recently re-built it completely (i.e. so I'm basically starting from scratch), but even from the beginning, the goal was to provide airport information that will help pilots get in and out of more demanding air strips by providing/collecting information that isn't readily available for many of those strips (e.g. video, aerial photos, etc.).

Another goal is to promote 'backcountry' flying and support the people and organizations that protect and preserve 'backcountry' airports, so the site will probably have different feel than the sites that include golf courses, casinos, etc.

It's a community-based site, so the users will have a big part in how it shapes up.

Chris,

That's a very nice looking site. I'll take some time a give it a more detailed look later, but I sure do like the graphics and feel of it.
