GPS jamming, spoofing, military, LORAN article

It's insanely easy to jam as the signal sits at around -118dBm at your receiver.

Won't be long before a GPS/INS combo will be offered for small GA. Cost & maint will be the major issue.

I don't see the addition of INS as necessarily increasing maintenance costs. Sure, there's always software updates but the hardware should be robust. How often do AHRS fail?

Well, I won't mention the company that used make our EFIS, but our AHRS failed about every other year. Mech told me the AHRS box was 16K to replace.

I'm sure some company will come out with a box that's compact, cheap and with incredible reliability for small GA. I just haven't seen it yet. Not sure an INS backup is all that important when ground based NAVAIDs are still plentiful.

Our AHRS came from the factory with a glitch, on a new airplane, but that was probably infant mortality. They traced the fault to one, but they replaced both for good measure (obviously under warranty). The replacements have been fine for 6 years.

I'm sure the failures are there but I haven't heard of folks replacing the AHRS on G-1000 or Aspens very often. Aspen did have a batch of bad sensors early in production. Haven't heard of major problems from the experimental guys and there are a lot of those systems out there.

I agree. Our G500H has been flawless in 4 years. Experimental, well for the most part, yes pretty reliable, that it unless you still have Blue Mountain. One of the reasons I don't fly IFR in my Velocity anymore is because of its BM EFIS.
