Except a random hold. Took the plane XC to a family wedding over the weekend. Clear and a million there, forecast showed Sunday would be IFR to MVR coming back. Sunday….well OVC001 with tops >10,000 at the departure airport and LIFR all the way home to gusts made us decide to delay a day.

Today, SKC arriving to calm and OVC 019. Not bad, so we filed with an alternate and called for our clearance. No answer, so I tried again. Still no answer.

Launched and picked up our clearance in the air. 45mins from landing, we got a re-route to a STAR. Home drome was advertising the VOR and we got solid IMC at 6000. Right after briefing the VOR, approach cleared me to the IAF on the RNAV I wanted, so I got to reload everything just in time to start a late descent to the feeder.

Stabilized in IMC, intercepted final and handed off to tower. Congratulations, circle to land and can you please let us know what the bases are.

Broke out four hundred feet above minimums, but couldn’t see the field until a mile out. Oh yeah, PAPI u/s on the runway I was circling to. Touched down to a wet runway and taxi to park. Since nobody was flying, the only parking spot open required me to use the tow bar. At least that worked as advertised.

It’s been a long time since I’ve been able to log an approach in actual and today, it counted. Looking at flight aware, it looks like I hit the only rain clouds in SAT today.

On rollout, tower said “nice job”. The only way it could have been better is if I was in a 195.
