I got cut off in the pattern three times today and was ecstatic about it. OK, I didn't really consider any of the situations being cut-off, but the local culture's capability to expedite things has experienced a downward spiral in recent years, so I was pleasantly surprised that 3 pilots were modestly aggressive. One of 'em in a Vision jet.

All three aircraft that "cut me off" were aircraft taking the runway and departing as I turned 1/2 mile final. I was happy that at least some of the other locals consider that decent spacing. I know I do. But we have tons of flight school students circling my home field who would have never made that departure (so you sit behind them waiting to depart for a lifetime) or would have freaked out if someone departed in front of them like that.

Yay, good piloting.

Funny. I got chewed out for cutting a guy off that just turned a 1 mile base.

Yeah. Not uncommon in a world of B-52 patterns and stabilized approaches for aircraft that can easily perform power off landings from a tight pattern.

And to think I was admonished going into KMCO yesterday because I couldn't keep up with the 737's even though I was doing 180kts. until short final. Adding to that, I was VFR and they kept trying to vector me in to clouds on final.

Going out, I took off right after a CJ landed and had barely exited the runway, while a Spirt airbus was on a 2 mile final.

I hear ya. What were you flying?

I've started just asking the other plane on final or base if I have room to get out in front of them. You never know for sure with flight schools whether it's going to be a short approach or a CFI's going to call a herd of elephants on the runway and go around.

I, too, have gotten yelled at by departing while someone was on a mile final in a 172 or 182. I was nearly to pattern altitude before he touched down I think.
