Got assigned an “operating as” tag

Got VFR flight following and MSP class Bravo clearance yesterday. Later I checked FlightAware and it showed my tail number as usual, but on that flight I was “operating as X123” (The last three of my tail in this case is 123). This was a first for me.

I’m guessing it’s due to receiving FF and a squawk from ATC, but it hasn’t happened on past similar flights. Anyone experienced this? Thanks.
 
that’s some serious James Bond sht right thar.
 
Controller probably heard half your callsign and typed it. Never went back and corrected it for a VFR.
 
I learned a long time ago that approach control in my area often doesn't key in all the info on VFR popups. The often just use one letter for the aircraft type. While C for Cessna and P for Piper works pretty well, my Navion got regularly called a Navaho after a handoff.
