Hello

I was wondering if anyone had any pireps for other action cams like the SONY AS-15, or Contour+2, etc. I am looking for a something solid to capture some of my training, but not looking for the top of the line action cam. Any recommendations? or would GoPro be the best bet?

Thanks

Pick up a GoPro Hero 2. You dont need super fancy and they get great footage.

I also noticed that the hero 3 white edition is essentially the same as hero 2 but it can connect to an iphone would that be a useful option to have?

Look at the cams used in most of the reality adventure/action shows... I mostly see GoPros. Survivor, Mythbusters, Top Gear, Alaska Survival, Alaska Flying, Alaska Hiway Patrol, Alaska Gold mining, Discovery Channel, Red Tails movie, Deadliest Catch, Ice Road Truckers, and Ax Men.... just the tip of the iceberg.

Gopro is the standard. Which one is the key, I still use a HD(pre2) Gopro. Works fine. People have been geeking out about video quality since the pre Hi8 days yet it doesn't matter back then Hi8 was better then most TVs could deliver. You will consume the footage on a computer then make your buddies suffer through it on a phone, they will all work. I'd get a gopro silver or 2 and be happy.

And if you're going to point it out the front where that fan thingy turns, spend the extra $$ to add a ND filter to get rid of most of that prop distortion.

That depends.

That feature is useful for just capturing specific parts of a flight. Like you just want to film youre landing or get some pictures of you in a turn or whatever. However if you want to film the entire flight it sucks up your battery life and has no real advantage.

I believe the Hero 2 can get a "backpack" that will allow it to do the iphone thing.

I have a 2 Hero2, and 2 Hero3 blacks. They seem to be the gold standard, though they are also the first to offer a viable camera. There was a TV show I saw a while back that compared a Hero2, a Contour, and one other camera, and found the Hero2 to be the best overall. There main complaint was the mounting system, but if you use the KISS method it is not bad.

The nice thing about the Hero is their versatility. I have used them for boating, and flying. I have a friend who uses them when he kayaks. The gopro site shows all sorts of uses in all sorts of situations.

Check out Drift Innovation's line of cameras. I like my older Drift HD170 Stealth just fine and I got it on sale for under $200 a while ago.
