The weather on Saturday was awful as usual for the annual Hartford balloon rally, but the forecast for today looked quite promising. It turned out to be quit nice today actually. Bases were around 6,000' MSL and 2-5 kt lift was to be found in lots of places.

With this in mind i decided to try for my silver distance (50km) flight today. I didn't make it, but I still had a good time. I ended up flying a 100 km triangle in a little over 4 hours.

In retrospect I should have just stayed up another hour to finish my silver duration of 5 hours, but my bladder and butt were telling me it was time to pack it in. I did get my silver altitude gain of 1000m so I at least have that done now.

I also had some altitude to play with at the end of the day, so I decided to try a couple of spins and stalls. I discovered that my plane has very benign stall/spin characteristics. It would mainly mush along if I just pulled the nose up gradually, and I had to forcefully kick the rudder to get it to break into a spin.

sounds like fun! My back is out, so I didn't fly this weekend - I was supposed to fly the Blanik back to from getting its annual. I've never done a long distance tow before and think it would have been cool, but alas... :)

Pete.. you need to trailer that Ka6 to Texas or out west.
Sounded like a fun flight.

pete -

next time, no returning to the airport allowed! :D

Yeah I talked to matt last night, and he promised to set up the AA battery to shoot me down if I tried to return :D

ye ahe told me that. funny guy.

is 4 hrs your longest flight so far? Silver Duration is certainly an Iron Butt award. Hopefully you can knock taht out next time.

On minute Zero, John Ryan was in Prudhoe Bay, on the North Shore of Alaska. 5,191 minutes later, Ryan was in Key West, Florida, having traversed the entire North American Continent, the long way, on his 2005 Yamaha FJR 1300, outfitted with Metzeler Z6 Interact sport-touring tires. And with those 5,191 minutes, or, if you prefer, 86 hours and 31 minutes, Ryan totally destroyed the existing time record for this trip, of 96:01, by a clean 9.5 hours!

Now THAT'S an iron butt!

Oh, and his 2005 Yamaha FJR1300 has over 140,000 miles on it.
