Does anybody know how to brighten up the buttons on a G430w?
 
Turning the rheostat on the panel aughta do it......



Or go in the Aux menu, page over to backlight and see if that works.

Have a look at the 430 installation manual, available at Garmin's website. There is a pin on the back of the unit to adjust backlit key brightness. Make sure it's connected, or not just shunted with a fixed resistor. Also verify by tracing this wire to which rheostat it's connected with.
 
It may also be dimming off a photocell. You may need to go into Config mode and set the min dim level.
