I will soon be taking a check ride for PPLSEL add-on to my PPL – G (glider). Looking for feedback on anybody else’s experience who have done this. If I am reading the ACS correctly, in the back appendix, it does not appear as if I need to be tested on all of the criteria. Has anybody else gone from a glider PPL to SEL and did the DPE follow the matrix in the ACS or were you required to do the whole thing? Any feedback on an add-on check ride would be appreciated.

Having done other add-ons, it's my experience that most DPEs won't do more than they have to, unless you give them a reason to. But YMMV, and the only way to find out what your DPE is going to do is to ask him.

Sorry for the delay in responding. The DPE is not restricted to what is in the matrix. That is the minimum subject areas that he must cover. He can ask for demonstration of any knowledge or maneuver in the PTS/ACS.

I have one of those “three-day seaplane add-on rating course” on my bucket list. I didn’t realize that I have to prepare for everything in the ACS cover to cover.

If you are with a reputable seaplane company doing the add-on. I expect the DPE is "on staff" and probably "in the know". Most of those courses teach the check ride.
