Glider flying question

its optional but the other guys at the field will probably look at you funny :)

seriously though they are a nice compromise for providing shade but not limiting visibility

Plus it identifies you as that Cool hotshot glider pilot guy.....

(see profile Pic :D)

makes you easier to spot at PoA fly ins too

All good reasons!! ;)

I just noticed that is the glide pilot uniform!

I figured it had to do with the constant barrage of sunlight that you get in the gliders.

I don't leave home (except for the office) without one.

I used to think the floppy bucket hat was all about not bumping the inside of the canopy with the bill of a ball cap, but it's mostly about shade.
Not just in flight, either- spend a sunny day gliding, staging, hanging out waiting your turn, etc., etc. and if you're wearing an ordinary cap your ears and neck will get roasted. Even with sunblock, it's helpful to just have a little shade on those areas.

yabut at that price i wouldnt want to put all my pins in it!

Actually when mine rotted out (literally) was when I stopped actively flying gliders. You just can't go without it.
