Single engine glider? Was this a motorglider? Or just bad press as usual...
 
The article says "Single Engine Glider Plane".

I'm very confuse.
 
Hard to tell from that picture, but I'll bet it's an ultralight type aircraft and perhaps not really a glider until the engine quit.

I like that pilots statement, "the trees hit the plane". :)

It looks like he did a vertical descent through the trees. The wings look great even after a line of trees hit them.
 
You can see the field he was probably aiming for. Depending on when the engine ran rough, not sure if turning back would have been closer. But a river to cross. There were possible fields next to the river.
