I am thinking about adding a glider rating and Lanier has a Pipistrel Motor Glider that considerably reduces the clock time by self launching.

Any PIREPs from there or similar places?

The Pipestrel’s fly regularly at KGVL. I shared the pattern with one this morning, they were doing T&G’s . I think that one had the short wings on today. I don’t know the availability but have seen the long wing/glider quite often. Lanier Flight Center runs a very professional operation. I earned my PPL with them in 2006.

I have over 1000 hours in Pipstrel motorgliders. I think they’re the finest motor glider available. I find them very comfortable and I’ve managed to stay aloft five, six even 7+ hours. (thanks to the motor assist) that being said, you’re not gonna win any glider competitions with these things.
What puzzles me is despite selling over 3000 of the high wing motorglider worldwide (in various wingspan sizes) they were never big sellers in the USA. Every year they have the Primo spot at Oshkosh right past the main gate and get lots of looks, but not that many sales.
The rotax engine never disappoints. Turn the key, and it immediately roars to life whenever you need (fuel efficient, economical) power.

Rotax Roaring? Ha! It sounds more like a weed whacker.
Nauga, probably

Most of my friends at GVL call mine the Singer sewing machine.

A Glider rating using a Motor-Glider capable of Self Launch is a good way to accomplish the initial rating. You should be able with the Pipstrel be able to ger a firm grasp of thermal, wind effects, ridge lift, etc. You will get a better understanding of local weather and what the air is doing. There are not many places to rent a motor glider. Most glider operations in the US are pure gliders with either Aero Tow or Ground Launch.

Additional launch methods of Aero Tow, and Ground Launch, are simple instructor endorsements. Additional check rides are not required. Depending on your proficiency and experience with formation flying, aero tow may take some getting used to with proficiency of the "emergency procedures on tow".

Any glider, with any self propulsion capability, whether self launch or sustainer, must be flown as if that engine is not going to start. ROTAX engines are very reliable, but there are instances of failed air starts for various reasons. Low Battery, failed starter motor, once the propellor has changed from low drag soaring mode, to let's get the engine started mode, that is a lot of drag, comparatively. There best be someplace you can land, true glider style, with no propulsion.
