Very strange. The aerial shot is of Rockland, Maine harbor area, just barely away from Samoset Resort complex.l The construction company is Prock Marine Company, Contractors. At roughly 80 mph, shooting the area AND staying clear of KRKD approach patterns, there wasn't much time to analyze the surface area. I already knew what was there.
BUT: Look at the outside "island" with the two barges, etc. That section is a duplicate of the shore-bound barges. HOW DID THAT OCCUR? I only noticed the phenomena when I downloaded the shoot and becan post processing. Weird!!!
Sorry about the size; suggest Right Click and "Open Link in New Window."

I see it, too. Odd.

Possibly some kind of reflection that caused that?

Is it that way on the original file or only the copy? (Could the image have gotten corrupted when it was copied?)

Other than that, the only explanation is supernatural.:)

I bet it is a thin layer of oil (sheen) drifting away from the construction work.
That's not it.

Look at the top of the oil sheen - there is a barge against a dock. Now look above and to the right of that barge and you'll see the same image of the barge and dock again. Zoom in on that area.

The follow-up: This is the original image at top of thread. With some additional post processing AFTER the "cropped shot" I sent to the company, the ghost structures have disappeared, though I've kept the original. The cropped image can still support a 24" x 36" print and the Prock family like the view. Irony: the exec. secretary who mused about the "funky happening" grew up about a couple miles from me, though ten+ years behind me.

I think it's similar - not a duplicate - I can see quite a few differences. Are you certain it's not physically there?

It's NOT physically there. That factor is what caught my attention as soon as I viewed the download. The few minor differences in "ghost" and actual were also interesting, as though one commercial vessel had disappeared.

Does your camera use HDR?

That combines two images at different exposures to get a higher dynamic range.

It can cause weird effects if either the camera or objects in the field are moving.

Otherwise, something electronic just hiccuped.

I see three separate artifacts, melted together.

1) The barge and dock on the right.
2) The tugboat against the dock and the corner of the dock.
3) The 2nd dock on the left.

#1 is easy to see.

#3 is easy to see.

#2 is partially visible, at the top end of the artifact item #1.

Edit: Now I also notice #4 that 6PC highlighted.

You need a new camera!!!

They both look like they are there to me. You have two sets of sistership construction dredges. There is a longer pier section on one and a tug attached to the other.

Those graphics from 6PC are fascinating. After I sent the "crop shot" to Prock Marine I received the following in an email:
"Yes it is Prock Marine Company with a funky happening in the picture.

In the immediate fore ground there appears to be a floating island with 2 barges when it is really the same as what is in front of it. Mr. Prock laughed and said that if the city were to see the "funky happening" picture he hopes he won't have to pay taxes on the ghost island and the extra equipment he didn't know the family had.

Harley, are they in the camera (original image) or the post software?

I seem to recall something about one of the Canon cameras having an issue with double images on one version of firmware.

Nobody asked, but here's the cropped version, mostly "fixed" with a bit of more retouching to be done.

Good question, Bill. I don't have the "In-camera" records to make the comparison. I only noticed the phenomenon after the download. That same shoot had over 200 images of islands(and other
stuff) from Rockland to the Canadian border(Eastport, Maine), with the Rockland series being done during the return flight from down east. No other image showed a similar "funky happening."

Are you sure you weren't near Haven, Maine?

If you're referring to Vinalhaven or North Haven, or even Criehaven, flew over/around all three during the shoot, but this set was definitely Rockland, barely across the bay from Knox County Regional Airport, slightly to the right of this shot. You can see Prock Marine's barge/cranes sticking up in the distance.

HR
Duh! In the process of several other photo projects I'm working, I JUST looked at your Link for the "Fictional Haven." Good one, thanks!

I'm no expert on photography but I wonder if it could be light reflection between the elements of the lens.

Sorry - it was my poor attempt at humor. Haven Maine is a fictional town of the SyFy channel TV Series "Haven" where lots of supernatural things happen.

My layman's view is that there is no way this is optical in nature.

I think optical reflections or water on the lens would show chromatic aberration or distortion.

I really think it has to be some sort of a digital glitch.

But I might be wrong!

Cool effect nonetheless.

I agree. Interesting that it appears to have happened only in one image. Maybe a shot from a cosmic ray or other form of solar radiation flipped a bit during the internal transfer from the CCD to the memory, or some other hiccup.

The mission was primarily the islands coverage, but time was appropriate to get other stuff. For Henning: Maine is more than kayaks, lobster boats, and summer sail boats. Here's the State of Maine, training ship at Maine Maritime Academy. The Academy isn't all that's in Castine, but it's most of the action.

No, not really. This would be a processing issue between the CCD and the memory.

Harley, are you shooting RAW, TIFF, or JPEG?

Henning: JPEG. Same day, further out to sea - - -

(Yes, proper separation was being maintained.)

Mystery not solved, yet. On Friday I had driven to the area for the day. I visited the scene and took several pictures from the Prock Marine Company corp. office building deck. Note the shore-side dock that was in the original aerial shot. Now look at the shot from the shore. There are no other structures and barges in the water outbound of the normal facilities. (In the distance is the Rockland Breakwater and Lighthouse.)

These things are portable, I'm not understanding what I'm supposed to be noticing in this picture.

Henning: The aerial shot displayed the strange "visual" of duplication of docks/barges outbound of the regular installations. The most recent photo, from land(yesterday) shows Prock's dock and outward from there, including the area where the "ghost images" had appeared. Randy Prock told me yesterday that the company has never had facilities/barges in the position which was the funky occurrence in my aerial shot. The crew was getting enjoyment from the weird circumstance in that aerial shot.

Harley,

I'm still going to say it was refraction/reflection within the lens. I've seen that on photos friends have taken of approaching trains where there will be a ghost of the headlight that is removed from the front of the locomotive. It's a rare occurrence but it does happen. I've never had it happen on my Nikon.
