Never been to OshKosh so it's on my bucket list. Next year is the 80th anniversary for the Navion so I would like to fly my plane up there. However at 73 yr old I am not much of a camper anymore so I would prefer to find some rooms for me and passengers. So just how does one go about getting a room anywhere near the field and not a 30min plus drive away? Checking all the Hilton branded Hotels show they are all sold out for the 2026 dates. Is that true or has another outfit bought all the rooms for re renting them out later. The EAA web site says dorm rental opens up later in the fall. Not sure how dorm rental works or Air BnB either. Same question with car rentals? How and when do you have to reserve them? I would prefer to fly up a day or so early and then leave Thursday morning after the Wed night airshow. Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks

You’ll find some good info in the Airventure section of Cool Places to Fly. While you navigate there, here’s last year’s thread that discusses several options including Air BnB, UWO, staying in Appleton and shuttling in every day or renting a travel trailer across from the show grounds.

Budget dependent, I’d see about staying at Sleepy Hollow…get on the sign up list now and back that up with an Air BnB.

Hertz has a desk at the terminal I believe (even though there's no air service to OSH anymore). I've arranged rides for people to go there to pick up rentals. I'm sure Enterprise has ideas on how to get you cars as well. I believe the HGI opens the room block right after the previous year's show at some egregious nightly rate and sells out quickly. Don't know about the Hilton downtown.
Official information here

Dorms go up for reservation in the fall. They have ones with or without air conditioning, but you get a bed and real (but communal) toilets and showers. You can take the city buses between the campus and the show. Stayed there the first year. Every other year (save one when I camped in Schoeller with our EAA chapter), I've camped with the plane. Two years in the North40 with the skyhawk and the rest with the Navion down in Vintage.

UWO dorms are a great option, if you don't mind living in the past again. There are busses traveling between the dorms and the field, the cafeteria isn't bad, wifi works fine. Some of the dorms are airconditioned, need to make your reservation in one of them. Lawrence Univ in Appleton is another option, I prefer it to UWO but transportation is a bit more difficult. Here are the details for this past event:

Hotels for the week (even Green Bay) are extortion but this is the week when the area makes a goodly amount of it's financial budget. Fortunately, the restaurants don't jack up prices (much).

For the dorm rooms is it one room per person or one room for say 3-4 folks? I would be bringing 1 if not 2 other pax with me.

Dorm rooms have two single beds and I beleive there's a few with "Family" arrangements.

As for car rentals….the local ford dealer Les Stumpf, in Appleton also rents cars. But call far, far in advance to book one.

My first year I had a reservation in the Sacred Heart convent.

Second vote for the dorms at UWO. I went into Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport. I had points, so the airfare was cheap. I took a bus from Mitchell Airport to UWO. It really couldn't be more convenient. The bus picks you up outside the baggage carousels at the airport and drops you off right in front of the reception center at UWO. It's a two block walk to the dorms this year. It was a one block walk last year, but the main residence hall is closed. The rooms come with four sheets and two spreads, towels and washcloths. Showers are shared by everyone on the floor. The rooms were womens' dorms only. You will not find any 400 thread count sheets, but what is provided is functional. The first two years, the dorm rooms I had were furnished with a small refrigerator and microwave. This year, despite having an airconditioned room which were supposed to come with those appliances, none were provided.

The cafeteria is another one block walk. What they lack in quality they more than make up for in quantity. If you leave hungry, there's something wrong with you. There are excellent salad and fruit bars with every offering imaginable. There are steak nights and prime rib nights. The Bananas Foster was a bit gummy, though. Tickets for the meals are available at a discount for 3 or 5 day purchases.

When you walk out of the cafeteria, the shuttle picks you up across the street to go to Whitman Regional. The city ended its contract with EAA, and now they use cheese wagons. I miss the city busses because they were very conducive to lively conversations among the attendees. I had great conversations with people from New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, France, Germany and Great Britain. Not so with school busses, conversation is difficult. The busses drop you off outside one of the entrances to Airventure, about a block away.

Leaving is the reverse procedure. Busses run extended hours for the Wednesday and Saturday night air shows.

When you are ready to return home, there is a bus which picks you up outside the dorm, and drops you off at Milwaukee Mitchell. Other than spreading a tarp over the wing and eating out of dumpsters, this is the most efficient way of attending Kosh. Figuring the cost of gas from the East Coast, it is probably the cheapest way.

One year I rented a car from Milwaukee airport. I really didn't have many places to go in the evenings. You have to pay for parking on the student lots at UWO. When I returned the car, I got a bill for about $200.00 for damage to the interior. Luckily for me, I had photos documenting every square inch of the outside and inside. The rental company went away, but I decided that if I could avoid car rental, I'd do it. Of course, there's always Lyft/Uber if you are so inclined.
