For those that have done been there, I'm curious how the turf is in June.

Unfortunately, I can't make the POA fly-in (have a conference here in San Diego that I am responsible for running that week), but I am considering an overnight at Gaston's in late June when I fly the 170 across the country.

If I do it, I'd plan for an early morning departure. Is the grass typically wet with dew, or is it fairly firm?

If it rains really hard it tends to dry itself up within a few hours. But if it rains really hard for a month then there will be some wet spots but those spots are almost always towards the beginning 24. Does not effect landing operations and can easily be avoided on takeoff.

Most years though the ground is very firm and dry and if it rains will be dry within a few hours.

It's probably the best maintained grass runway I've seen. Shouldn't be an issue. You can always call them for a condition report.

Thanks Jesse!

Its often dew-y, the valley fills with fog from the river many nights. Never considered dew a huge issue, I bet the 170 can handle it - the grass is usually short.
Getting out before sun up can have a vis problem.

Definitely will keep that in mind since I like early morning departures.
