TLDR:
Can I safely use the link Garmin provides to dl the USB drivers, or as it states on their intro page there is the risk of device damage requiring return to factory/dealer?

I couldn't get a the db to load onto the disk for my 530 (continuous spinner) so I uninstalled, reinstalled the program on my Win10 laptop.
Still no joy so I removed the only other Garmin app, the USB drivers.

I use the Garmin card reader to connect via usbA, card to laptop.

Warning

This software should only be uploaded to the unit for which it is intended. If this software is uploaded to a GPS unit other than the product it is designed for, it will render the unit inoperative.

If the software upload fails, and subsequent upload attempts prove unsuccessful, the unit may need to be returned to Garmin for service.

Are these USB drivers necessary? For the GNS 430/530 you need the FlyGarmin app and their card programmer. I haven't installed any special drivers on any of my computers for updating my GNS430 cards.

If you're following the prompts on fly.garmin.com to download and install the Garmin Database Manager app, and it directs you to download drivers its probably because you need a backwards compatible USB driver to work with the GNS series data card reader. Its so old that newer WIndows USB drivers won't run it. You should be safe to click on the link that Garmin prompts.

Beware the GNS series navigator has different cards and card readers and they are not all compatible with each other. There is a Garmin Service Letter that explains: Garmin Service Advisory 1455a

Yes it wouldn’t see the card reader without the drivers - no light on the reader.
I got on their aog hotline last night, the tech was not 100% sure…. but the driver download did work; I’m back in bidnez.

If you are using an external card reader that plugs into the USB port, unplug the reader and open the database manager. Go to the download page that ask you to select the card location. Now put the SD card in the reader and only now plug the reader into your computer. You may have to select or refresh the drive location...
