A buddy asked me to make suggestions on setting up his new Garmin GPS 750 screen, and I just got back from the airport scratching my head.
The first thing I recommended was eliminating the large amount of useless screen clutter (IMO) from intersections or waypoints not needed for the flight. They are presented all over the screen, regardless of destination, or direction of flight. We figured out the rest of the screen settings desired, and it's all straightforward, and in tune to the way we fly.
Like myself, he likes flying enroute with the screen range zoom set at 30 to 40 miles, in the Track Up orientation. We've both been flying other models of GPS moving maps, and prefer using this screen zoom range and Track up for positional awareness.
This enables a quick real time view of the closest airports presented on the screen in case of an emergency (i.e., engine failure), and quickly locating which way to turn the plane at the very beginning of a problem. Quick and easy. Find a runway, turn towards it, and proceed towards it by positioning this airport in the upper middle (vertically centered) region of the screen. Then range the screen down while approaching the airport to keep it in view in the upper center of the screen.
I'm sure other pilots have different methods, but the above is what we're used to and wish to retain. It's been a benefit to me in multiple situations where a change of destination or route was immediately needed.
My question is, how do we reduce the amount of intersections, or waypoints presented on the 750's moving map that are not desired... we can't figure it out. Anybody have suggestions?
