I purchased a garmin GLO to use as an external GPS receiver with garmin pilot. I use this in conjunction with my tablet to help with situational awareness. I made a flight on Saturday from KGEU to KCHD. I stayed to the North of KPHX and the South of KSDL, and then transitioned the KFFZ airspace on the way back to KCHD. I extensively reviewed visual landmarks before the flight so I could make sure to stay out of the KPHX bravo airspace.

While making the flight, I had the GLO on the dash of the 172. We were flying into this sun. The GLO is black, and with the sun shining on it, it soaked up a few too many rays, and shut off. I didn't need the tablet for navigation or anything, but once the GLO shut off, that little blue airplane on the TAC on my tablet turned into a stationary blue dot. It wasn't a factor at all, I still completed the flight just fine. I stayed clear of the Bravo. I made the transition through KFFZ just fine, and landed back at KCHD without incident. That being said, I would sure like it if I could keep the GLO from overheating.

For those of you that use external GPS receivers with a tablet, do you do anything to keep the GPS receiver from overheating? Where do you put it? In my case, I pulled the receiver off the dash, let it cool down, turned it back on, and had my sister who was in the right seat hold on to it for me.

I've had the same problem with my GLO, so I just leave it on the passenger seat or on the back seat instead of the dash and no more overheating problems. It doesn't have any problems getting a signal from the seat, at least in low wing airplanes.

I had the reverse happen to me. My Bad Elf GPS sat on the dash in full view of the sun and never shut down, but my kneeboard mounted iPad mini overheated. I was very surprised. Fortunately I was at 9,500 feet and was able to direct some outside air at it for a minute or so and it cooled right down. I am interested to hear what others do to shade their devices.

I have put it in the back seat of the 172 before, and it works ok. The problem was that on this flight, I had my sister and her two sons. All the seats were full. Perhaps I could have left it in the baggage compartment (but then it is out of my reach, which I don't really like), or just asked my sister to hold it in her lap.

No fans of the GLO here? Does anyone have overheating problems at all?

I use a Garmin GLO with Foreflight. I have pockets on the seatbacks of the two front seats and it works fine just dropping it in one of those, or in the checklist pocket on the left sidewall. Have never had a problem with it providing a good GPS signal no matter where it is in the cabin. The battery lasts far longer than my iPad charge so I don't worry about having it plugged in on most flights.

I generally try to keep any electronics (and anything else) off the glareshield.
