"We" have a Garmin 295 on the yoke wired to an Edi engine monitor, providing waypoint distance, etc. we also have a 496 sitting doing nothing that we'd like to put in its place. Is it just a drop-in replacement with the same cable? Is a (new?) 337 required?

Eh, some research has shown that the 295 uses a 4pin arrangement with two of those pins for data. The 296 through at least the 496 uses a 9 pin connector. So now I need to see if there is an adapter. If not, this will require a visit from Mobile Mike or something.

A 337 for a portable GPS?

Never heard that one before...

No 337. The JPI EDM data input lines are spliced into the detachable power/data cable for the 295. There's no permanent connection.

And before anybody jumps on the gotcha - the GPS power comes from the lighter plug.

It'll work the same way with a 496 but I'm sure it has another kind of power/data cable.

Once you hard wire it it's not a portable.

Thanks Mike. https://www.jpinstruments.com/technical-support/gps-interface-connections/ shows the pinouts for this, and we have the cable to splice into, as well as the yoke mount, since the unit is a slightly different size than the 295.
