My Dad played in the US Open once; had the flu, lost first round, but lost 4-6, 6-8, 8-10. He figured he'd have a shot the next year, with his health intact, but he was by then otherwise engaged in the south Pacific Ocean, dealing with intransigent Japanese.

Edit (again): I lied. My dad lost first round 2-6, 6-8, 8-10. Still nothing to be ashamed of. Bobby Riggs was the Men's Singles champ that year.
