Mary and I are headed to Charleston for a few days get-away and have decided to make the additional hop south west to Galveston for a few days. I'm looking for any good info on places to eat, stay or must see that you have first hand knowledge of.

Gaido’s is the classic. As beachfront as you get for a hotel and an historic restaurant. Easily accessed from GLS.

The Tremont House is in the historic downtown area and lots to walk to nearby.

Hotel Galvez is another close to the water classic, but not as convenient to much.

Harbor House is close to the cruise terminal and okay with a couple of good restaurants dockside.

Thank you!

I’ll search the locations noted and share them with my bride. Appreciate the info.

Well enjoy Rudy and Pacos for high end dining https://www.rudyandpaco.com/
Sunflower Cafe for Breakfast https://thesunflowerbakeryandcafe.com/
And second the Tremont House for accommodation and easy walk across the street to the Strand. The train museum close by is a hidden gem.
Also tour Ashton Villa…with Junteenth just around the corner go to the place where MG Gordon Grainger gave the speech that started it all…

Thanks for the info! We’re checking out the links.

The approach there is nice. Either over the bay with south wind or the gulf with north wind.

Tower doesn’t have radar so they usually have you call out position (if I remember correctly).

Don’t walk past the yellow spray painted tires on the PHX helicopter ramp to look at the big helis. Some dude will come bark at you.

Been there. There’s an offshore oil drilling museum that was interesting. There are those tram tour things. We took one like we often do at those kind of touristy destinations. It’s a good way to get the lay of the land and ideas of what to do next. Thing that sticks out in my memory are the tree sculptures. Big trees that died from whichever hurricane that was back then. Some folks got their chainsaws and did some pretty creative sculptures. There was a pretty cool train museum there also. Had some pretty good chow to, but I don’t remember restaurants names.
Oh yeah, your bride. My wife loved the place. Lotsa antique stores and stuff like that. I soloed to the drilling museum while she cruised retail row on her own.

If you like ships the Elissa and Seawolf Park is of interest. The USS Texas in the dry dock might be unique to see. The ferry was kinda fun.

*Elissa (in case anyone tries to Google that)

You might want to consider KEFD too. It’s 30 min from GLS. It has the Lonestar Flight Museum and you can taxi your plane to the museum. EFD has has self serve fuel that’s pretty inexpensive in the opposite side of the Lonestar Museum. The only FBO at EFD is Signature. They take good care of you and can work with you.

You can also fly into KLBX for good food and cheap gas. They have SS and FS gas. If you eat at the restaurant, then you get a .20/gal discount on FS. I usually choose this option and have the plane fueled while we eat. I think he is closed on Monday’s. I cant remember. I would check to make sure they’re open before going there.

Galveston is cool to visit. If you have kids, there is Schlitterbahn’s water park next to the airport. Moody Gardens, the aquarium, golf, and Strand are nice places to visit. You will need a car.
