GA very dangerours--Johns Hopkins study.

Safety should be improved.

Interesting article, Dave. The motorcycle analogy agrees with the statistics given out at Robinson's pilot safety course. Now if we could eliminate the "stupid pilot trick" kind of accidents, such as fuel exhaustion in fixed wing and running into towers, terrain, trees, and wires in helicopters, we'd all look much better...

I would be interested to see the normalization data spread across seat-miles and comparable equipment; IMO comparing safety rates on a 350 person 777 to that of a 4 seat VFR 172 isn't exactly comparable nor is it fair.

Though not supported all that well scientifically, it was an interesting read, Dave. Thanks for the link.

I tried not to take a position. Lots of different ways to slice the bread. There are definitely some places I would have suggested at least an alternative comparison.

Dave

Give ME, a grant to research safety, and I too can gather statistics to prove any point you would like to make. I have no respect for statistics.
they can be manipulated to fit any scenario. (My edits)

near bottom of page:

"Drowning statistics show that "midnight swims" and swimming in unsupervised areas are especially dangerous for young people ages 12 to 24."'

SO, MIDNIGHT SWIMS BY THOSE AGES SHOULD BE BANNED FOR SAFETY.....??????
Mandatory supervision of 24 year olds while swimming...??

and This laugh....

My recommendations...( based on their statistics...)

Keep Saskatchewan aboriginals away from water...

Allow swimming only on weekends...

No swimming in areas between 16 and 50 meters of a point of safety...

Ban swimming between 5 AM and 12 PM, in rural areas...

And how about this GEM.... culled from statistics in South Africa....

"Most black people simply cannot swim," Easlyn Young, manager of South Africa's Learn to Swim programme, told Reuters.

Hogwash.

Flying is totally safe.
Crashing is dangerous.
Don't crash..and failing that, crash as carefully as possible.

Wow, Talk about recycling old news. There is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING in there that is new news. Just a more "sinister tone" to the writing composition.

We're rich, they hate us. End of story.

I agree. So do cars. I also believe that way too many people get struck by lightning each year.

All of which can be influenced by training, education, and research. I wouldn't give up on any of them (less effort towards the last).
