G5 data logging?

Save me a trip to the airport and give me a head start planning some tests: Garmin makes it clear that the G5 is capable of logging data to a microSD card, but I can't seem to find details on *what* is logged. Can anyone tell me, or better yet point me to documentation that includes things like parameters, units, and formats (like precision and scaling, not just '.csv')? Dynon includes this in their documentation and I've gotten spoiled.

It logs multiple flights to the same log. I don't use FlySto so I can't tell you how that deals with multiple flights in one log.

To be clear, each flight (er, each time it's powered up) gets logged to its own separate CSV file. The files are stored in the data_log folder on the card, and have filenames of the format YYYYMMDD_KABC_HHMMSSDD.csv or something pretty close to that.

To be equally clear, my G5 writes to same circular log, conveniently named "DATA_LOG.CSV," every time it's powered up. I have my own code to separate and timestamp individual flights postflight. Maybe we have different firmware or settings, but I can work with what I've got.

Or maybe there's a reason for the difference buried in the configuration, firmware, and settings. The documentation for the logging feature is pretty much nonexistent but the capability is very good. Splitting and time tagging files is trivial - if you even need to.

I would imagine FlySto figures it out just fine. They do much more complex things than that. I hope they'll support my Insight G3's data logs someday though...

It is a bit disappointing that there isn't better documentation for the logging features on any of the Garmin gear, but it's also fairly straightforward most of the time - The parameter and units are both listed in the first couple of lines.

Where it can get odd is when they don't list things you might want to know. I can't think of anything on the piston side right offhand, but on the TBM, regardless of whether it's the G1000 or G3000, there are "E1" engine parameters, and "E2" engine parameters, and they aren't the same - There's E1 Torque and E2 Torque but in the same second they're two different values. And no, there aren't two engine data capture boxes. Best we could tell was that they're captured at just slightly different times. Another one is that the torque, which is listed in % in the cockpit, was listed in either N-m or ft-lb in the log, and you had to figure out the max value and divide to get the % torque.

FlySto will break out flights just fine. Basically it logs everything Garmin that's connected to it - for example I get tuned frequencies and frequency changes off of my 650 on the logs.

Key points
- don't try a card over 32GB (I use a 16GB and you could probably fly non stop for a year and not get close to filling it)
- confirm that logging is enabled in the system config
- insert the card into the G5

Yes! Each box will log whatever parameters it's getting over the HSDB from other Garmin boxes. I get a log from my GTN 750 and another from the GI 275; they each have slightly different values because they're logging at different times within the same second. And I just dump it all into FlySto and it figures everything out. Those guys are really good developers.
