So Garmin has finally officially owned up to the problem of G5s irreversibly draining the backup batteries during periods of inactivity with this service bulletin. I raised this issue with Garmin 2 years ago and was given the brush-off. Looks like three versions of backup batteries and software upgrades did not solve the issue, so now a hardware modification is required. The worst part is that Garmin will pay for the labor to comply only if done at a Garmin dealer, despite the fact that non-dealers can install the equipment. My G5 backup batteries will discharge at a rate of about 10-20% per week. If they ever get to zero, the batteries cannot be recharged. Not sure why they need to draw current while they are shut off.
