Since when do silly things like treaties matter compared to scary statements about FAA inspectors being furloughed? It's about politics, not constitutional and treaty obligations.

This is all theater. It's all intended to scare the the public and inconvenience them as much as possible, otherwise they might not even notice, much less give a ****, about the federal "shutdown."

On that point, even a lot of the teabaggers and the pinkos here are in agreement. Who'da thunk that would ever happen?

Chicago convention? Does it have that name because Chicago screwed up, or because some windy city politician got his hands on it?

You would think that closing down a FSDO would mean the FSDO provides no service, but I found the opposite today.

Weeks ago I sent an email to get WINGS recognition for a seminar that I'm organizing. Nobody replied until today, when the government is shut down. The head of a FSDO phoned me at home to ask me if I still wanted to arrange for WINGS status for the seminar.

He told me that he was the only one working at the office during the shut down. I suppose he was deemed to be "excepted" or "essential."

What that seemed to mean in practice is that it was nice and quiet so that he could catch up on work, even if the work isn't very "essential."

Every government plays the same game from the feds to the locals. Swear that the services that are most visible to the public are the ones that get axed. How many times have your school system threatened to eliminate busses or afterschool sports or teachers? When was the last time you saw the managers and their perks get cut?
By the way, where is our chief administrator today? Overseas! At what $100 million for the trip? Now there is fiscal responsibility. Sequestration certainly did not affect the White House.

How's your aunt in Chicago?

What government shutdown? Only 15 percent is shutdown. The 85 percent is out there doing what they've always done. (Whatever that is.)

It's really 80% and only when you include some of the quasi-federal guys like USPS and AMTRAK in the mix.

As far as individual agencies:

NASA Only 3% working
EPA 6%
Commerce (14% mostly NWS people)
Labor 18%
...

It's about 50% for defense (though only 20% of the intelligence guys are working all the recruiters are still drumming up business).
67% for Transportation (ATC, and many of the positions that are required to OPERATE the transportation system day-to-day).

86% for Homeland Security (notably the TSA, Secret Service, and Coast Guard)
96% for VA (most in places like the VA hospitals).

I thought it strange that the NTSB left the KSMO CJ2 crash shortly after arriving. No check, no investigation.

Look up the terms "Antideficiency Act"
