Friday I managed to wrangle Dad/CFI for a tune up flight. Since getting my IR I've spent a lot of time/energy trying to maintain/sharpen my instrument skills. I was concerned that my VFR skills might be suffering, so we went up and did some maneuvers and a few emergencies. 6 total landings in various configurations and speeds (one "engine out"). Really felt good to work at that stuff again.

Today, I managed to con my wife into joining me for a flight to Rochelle, IL (KRPJ) to get some lunch. Lots of activity there, both planes that had flown in (6 others while we were there) and drive-in traffic. The place was packed and I'm really glad to see that. Got flight following both ways, but flew basically by sectional chart (had other backup nav in place, but didn't use any of it).

It's been a great couple of days of flying around here and I'm really feeling sharp. Just thought I'd share.

Thanks for sharing,enjoy.

Thanks! Forgot to mention there was a Turbo Beaver that came in while we were getting ready to leave. Pretty cool looking plane, though I'm pretty sure I couldn't afford the fuel burn.

My fun flight Saturday night was an overflight of Lasalette Shrine in Attleboro and a stop for dinner at EWB's Airport Grille. The shrine boasts of the largest display in the area. Traffic to the shrine was backed up for miles on all roads. It was a nice 50 degree evening, smooth air, slight moon.
By the way, I recommend the grille for dinner. NIce food.

are we sharing fun vfr flights here? if so, I finally hit the Runway Café at downtown Greenville (GMU) with a coupl'a buddies this past weekend. fun flight, good burger w/pic to prove it :)

How was the food at Rochelle?

The food was pretty good. The place was packed at lunchtime on Sunday and maybe only 10 people there in planes. So local people are driving in for food. They have a huge skydiving operation there, too, so overflying the field is not recommended (they weren't jumping on Sunday, but I know around here they jump even when it's cold). We overflew east of the field (downwind) and then maneuvered to the south for an entry to the downwind leg (wind out of the west).

I've been there once before on an instrument training flight and the restaurant was busy then, too.

FUN flight and NO pictures?

Why do you teas us so badly? What have we ever done to you? :(

Pictures! Or else ... ;)

I'm really bad at taking photos, but my wife snapped one of the Rockford airport as we flew by it. And another of the ski hill we talked about going to but didn't know if they'd have snow (they did, but obviously stuff they made). The only photo I took was of the Turbo Beaver that came in while we were eating.

Sounds like a great flight! Apparently, pictures are required, though. ;)

I looked at the photo before dinner and was glad I had food to eat right away. Looks delicious!

Ski areas in that part of the country look kind of funny to me. I remember one near Peoria called Pottstown, I think

Yeah, they're usually old garbage dumps with some smoothing. Nothing like you guys have out there. Which is why my wife and I are planning another trip out west this Spring.
