Subject: Greenwood Flight Service Station

Mr. Hainsey,

First, let me apologize for the lack of communication with Mississippi airports prior to the closure of Greenwood AFSS and the subsequent FAA response providing the pilot complaint line. Lockheed Martin Flight Services headquarters has provided each facility with a facility closure checklist that includes coordination responsibilities. They will conduct an investigation to determine why airports in Mississippi were not contacted. Also, I will take appropriate action to ensure my staff provides more thoughtful responses to our customers.

The Greenwood flight plan area was relocated to the Washington Hub in Ashburn, VA. Lockheed Martin has set up phone numbers for specific functions.

Pilot Weather Briefing - 1-800-WX Brief

Report Notam conditions - 1-877-4-US-NTMS (1-877-487-6867)*

Weather Observations - 1-866-225-7410**

Supervisor (use this number for search & rescue) - 703-724-4288***

Clearance Delivery - 1-888-766-8267****

* Notams: Currently, this line will take you to the first available specialist (nationwide). On 8/8/07, Lockheed Martin will be adding a call tree to the Notam line. It will opererate similar to the wx-brief line. It will prompt you to say a state (or enter a numeric code) so you can be connected to the specialist working the sector for the area that the airport is located in.

** Weather Obs: If CWOs are unsuccessful using this line, they can use the WX-Brief line or the clearance delivery line to pass weather observations.

***Supervisor Line: This line can also be used to report aircraft accidents and other events you would have previously reported to the supervisor when GWO AFSS was open.

****Clearance Delivery: This line will also take you to the first available specialist nationwide. A pilot may or may not be connected to the specialist that has direct communication with the overlying control facility. If the pilot reaches someone who does not, the specialist will use an internal procedure to the obtain clearance. The procedure includes placing the pilot on hold, contacting the appropriate flight service sector who will contact the overlying control facility for the clearance. This line is scheduled to have a call tree added no later than 9/12/07. The call tree will prompt the pilot to say or enter a numeric code for the state they are departing from so they can be connected to the appropriate flight service sector.

I will make a follow-up call to you on Monday to answer any other questions you may have.

Thanks you,
Jeanne Giering

I'm a bit more than leary of a national clearance delivery system.

I'm a bit more than leary of a national clearance delivery system.

I can just hear it now:

"Cessna 12345, cleared to the John F. Kennedy airport via radar vectors direct, maintain FL190, departure with Philadelphia departure on 126.85, squawk 4562."

"Uhh, but sir, I'm a Piper Cherokee in Key West, Florida looking for an IFR to Ft. Myers"

"Uh, you are?!?"

I just noticed "Giering" is just one letter off of "Goering".

Coincidence?

Odd I should even notice.

:dunno:

Sorry to hear this stuff Steve. I was one of the first posters on the lack of FSS response several months ago. Interestingly, on my last trip, I did get through to them three times in Florida. That's the only location in which I tried.

Best,

Dave

so if a mere mortal pilot calls the local tower, can they give him/her the clearance over the phone? seems it may be good to know those area ATC phone numbers.

I tried to use it from Gaston's on the last day of the fly-in. Not sure where the guy I was talking to was based, but he putzed around for 5-10 minutes and was going to transfer me (meanwhile, there was that early afternoon storm approaching from the west). I told him to forget it and took off MVFR. Had to circle around Flippin until I could finally raise Memphis Center to pick up my clearance to head north.

I can see there being a black market developing for direct lines to ATC facilities. I've not had much luck trying to find them online.

...and I called from gaston's and got my clearance in about ten seconds.

Have had no problems with picking up clearances by phone when flying from T82 (Fredericksburg, TX).

YMMV!

I think that's the biggest issue I currently have with the Lockheed Martin FS21. I have received excellent service consistently from BDR AFSS, but I can't say the same of other FSS's.

They're usually either great or awful. It's really the inconsistency that bothers me most, and consolidating to one facility won't really fix that if most of the same employees are answering calls from the new location in Ashburn, VA (which is the word I've gotten).

LUCKY!!!

Got to the airport his morning for my daily commute to work. Had to file IFR to pop through a 400 OVC scud layer for my 25min flight. While sitting in the plane, called FSS (WX-BRIEF). Connected to Princeton FSS (I'm sitting about 40 miles from Ft. Dodge FSS office). Got the briefing, then filed with same briefer, then asked if they can get a clearance for me. He said "Uhhhhhhhhh... Let me see... 123.9 is listed for Departure from BNW, but that's DSM Approach, so it probably wouldn't work on the ground. Hmmm.. Let me see here... Hold on a second." [Insert boring musac in background] He comes back and says "OK, I've got the direct line to DSM ATC, but their line is busy, I'll keep trying. I'm sorry for this, we've been getting calls from outside our area all the time - from as far away as Colorado." I say "No problem."

He finally gets my IFR clearance for me, apologizing again for the wait. I made sure to let him know that there aren't any hard feelings against him.

I couldn't remember the darn Clearance Delivery phone number (it's stored in my phone now), but this doesn't speak well for their "Calling Tree" to solve their problems.

The couple times lately I've departed from a non-towered field, I've called TRACON direct. I don't see why that cannot continue. The best thing about it, you're often getting the clearance from the same controller you contact upon climbout.

Yep! That's what I'm doing now. Before landing at an uncontrolled field, I'm asking for the number to call for clearance when I depart if I can't get FSS. Just called Dane Regional Tower to leave Portage and they patched me through to the approach controller handling my area. She wanted me to wait over ten minutes because she gave another guy at the Dells a ten minute void time. I asked her if I could depart in the other direction or make a turn to depart as I would have to shut down the engines and restart later. She worked with me by allowing an immediate turn to he east if I departed immediately; which I did. Much better than trying to fuss with an intermediary.

Best,

Dave

I agree. I just see way too much room for error when it's passed between more than one person. Obviously, IMC is not the time you want an error of any kind.

The attachments is a list for Towers, TRACONs & Center Phone Numbers from AOPA site as well as a ARTCC phone list. They aren't that recent but I doubt those numbers will change much unlike local FSS numbers.

no you're not. Fort Dodge closed beginning of July.

having a clearance freq on the ground sure is nice. What approach did you shoot into Indianola? ;)

WHAT?! I didn't know that. :( :( :(

Actually it wasn't that bad. Just a low scud layer over Boone that I had to pop through. I punched right back through a hole once near IA41. Non-event. DSM Approach & tower are SUPER friendly after you talk to them twice a day for about 7 days straight. :D

i bet they are. perhaps Rick was working approach, he keeps his Vagabond at Indianola.
