What you have hear is an airline that cheats by advertising low fares and then adds on bogus charges like:

$10 to book the flight over the internet or $15 to book it on the phone.
A charge to get a pre-departue seat assignment.
$13 for a CARRY ON bag if you pay for it when you book or $50 at the airport.
They also have the option of paying a fee to avoid paying other fees later.

This is the stuff that really irks me these days with the airlines, I don't buy my tickets and it's often a PITA to get reimbursed all the BS fees. Just give a bloody final price on me and my luggage, if you want to charge me extra for food and drink, fine, but not for standard baggage.

I wouldn't have thought a smirk and arrogant attitude about to how stupid your customers are while talking directly at them would make a successful marketing campaign.

Marketing is not my area of expertise.

The customer is always right so long as they pay all the fees.

I don't have a problem with à la carte pricing. I have a problem with transparency and hidden penalties (like paying $50 on game day instead of $13 at booking).

This isn't ala carte pricing, it's figuring out what we can charge for without having it appear in the bottom line fare price that people are doing their competitive price analysis on. I.e, Yeah we have $39 fares to Las Vegas, but what we don't tell you is that it's magically another $10 for booking it and another $50 to bring on a bag that every airline (except one other who is failing miserably as well) allows for free.

Yeah, real transparent, the word I had in mind was FRAUDULENT.

I alternate between Hertz (#1 GOLD), Avis (Preferred), and National (Emerald Club). They all have my various preferences preenrolled and the even if not, all three of them quote the FINAL price when you inquire for a reservation, rather than giving you some base price and springing fees on you later.

I did one round trip on Allegiant, would never fly as a revenue customer again. As much as I don't like the deal with Southwest, Allegiant takes it to a whole different level.

The reason I like (among the airlines) Southwest is, there is pretty much none of the fee-charging going on. Bags included, real people at the airport and on the phone, no change fees, no fare forfeiture. Just a better system...

I hate flying (revenue) on Southwest because quite frankly, the people there drive me nuts. If I'm spending the money, I'll fly a legacy carrier in Economy Plus at worst, maybe upgrade to first if the price is right.

As a non-rev flyer, Southwest is one of the best.

I like Southwest because they don't charge a bunch of fees. It might be a little more expensive than my other option (normally) which is USAirways but I like that everything is transparent. I actually had a good experience on Delta the other day and as a result booked first class for another trip (It was only an extra $90 for two people for first). Allegiant though... you couldn't PAY ME to fly there again. And it's the only direct flight between my hometown and Phoenix. They're either broken (that means delayed) or flat out late for some reason (again, delayed!) and they're the meanest FA's in the industry. The flight crews seem nice and professional, but clearly the flight attendants don't care about their jobs or their customers. And there are screaming babies on EVERY. SINGLE. FLIGHT. I won't fly Allegiant anymore for anything. And the schedules suck, twice a week isn't enough espeically when it's at super super weird times.

Allegiant fills a niche market. Not for everyone, but apparently enough people are in that niche to keep them operating.

Oh, I thought you were referring to Delta/American/Continental/United/USAir.........

Yes, a niche market in which major competitor is Greyhound or the family station wagon.

I will go out of my way to fly Southwest (even though I don't really like not having an assigned seat) because my itinerary can change after booking, and they don't charge change fees. They also don't charge for standard checked bags. Yes, you're still really "paying" for all of that stuff through the ticket prices, but Southwest's ticket prices usually aren't any higher (and are sometimes lower) than low-fare competitors who do the nickel-and-dime routine.

My one annoyance with Southwest recently is their nickel-and-dime routine for check-in. It used to be that it was first-come, first-served. Then, they went to a fee-based "preferred" boarding, and now they've changed it again to a fee-based "early check-in." I've found it nearly impossible to get an A group, and sometimes not even a low-number B group, if I don't opt for the fee-based "early check-in" but instead do online check-in at the earliest possible opportunity.

This is my main reason for flying Southwest. I don't mind not having an assigned seat, especially since I always travel alone so it's not hard to get a window, which I prefer. It would be harder for a group or family. I don't care if it's like a bus, it IS a bus. I don't fly on airlines for the experience, just to get from here to there in a more efficient manner than driving.

Hey! you always get a window seat in the 'kota!

How I loathe flying commercial.

It limits us since I'll turn down a trip to avoid it. If I can't fly there, I don't want to go.

It's like going to Walmart. Such an uplifting experience .... :frown2:
