Four Dead In A 172R Crash Near Cuyahoga County Airport, Ohio

Maybe, if they are small.

With full tanks, the passenger load works out to 600-650 lb.

Seeing how the plane is in Cleveland, that would be two adults, right? :)

Witnesses heard the engine sputtering. Certainly would be more difficult to handle loss of engine power with four adults.

So sad.

RIP :(

The runway at that airport (I land there regularly) is in excess of 5K feet. They should have been able to figure out if they could get airborne well before running out of asphalt. That said, I wouldn't put it past a Skyhawk to lift 4 skinny college students.

Witnesses always hear engines sputtering. Sad, sad sad, with huge condolences to those left behind.

And people say I'm a dick.

Oh and, BTW, there is indeed another thread where folks are being a helluva lot more respectful.

Well, except for DesertNomad.

And, yes, I've fallen prey to the "must lambast someone" syndrome in the past. But Babar's crash, and all the dicks that came out of the woodwork on that one, convinced me that it's not the proper reaction.

I said "Heavy (over gross?), night, over trees, 4 college guys (maybe a lax preflight?)… just no margin for error there. RIP"

How is that disrespectful? Young people often think they are invincible… even more so around their peers. Perhaps it was simple mechanical failure, but either way night flights are simply more critical in every way. It's really a devastating crash. With every crash I read about, I think "that could have been me" and "what can I do to prevent that from being me".

:(

Maybe you should take your own advice here as well? :dunno:

You are welcome. :D

Altitude issue reported before crash that killed 4

Aug 27, 10:09 AM EDT
CLEVELAND (AP) -- Federal officials say the pilot of a small plane carrying four Ohio college students radioed the tower after takeoff to say he was having problems climbing and would be returning to the airport.

A National Transportation Safety Board spokesman says a preliminary report on the Monday night plane crash in suburban Cleveland should be ready within 10 days.

All four people aboard the plane were students at Case Western Reserve University. They planned to take a short sightseeing flight after their first day of classes when the plane crashed near Cuyahoga County Regional Airport in Willoughby Hills.

The plane is being stored in an airport hangar as the NTSB completes its on-scene investigation.

A man who lives near the airport says he heard a plane engine sputtering before the crash.

I suppose it is possible that they just couldn't get out of ground effect, but you'd think they'd have noticed before running out of pavement. We'll know more once the NTSB issues its report, since they'll work the weight and balance and check the engine. One thing for certain, something goes wrong at night and you don't know whether that black spot is a field of trees or grass. They look the same. I can't confidently say I wouldn't try and turn back in their place.

I would hardly put 4 adults in my S model. The R model is down 20 ponies. What was he thinking???

I've had four in my Cherokee and surmounted mountains. Everyone was pretty small and skinny save my copilot, who was tall and skinny. The numbers worked out just fine. If I can do that in a Cherokee 140 I would think a Skyhawk could lift four skinny college students, if skinny students they were. There is such a thing as big fat college students, though.

I was thinking "normal" adults. College kids are pre-adults.

But you're right.

I thought it said they were wrestling team members. Don't wrestlers tend to be a little more on the heavy side?

I have done charters for high school and college wrestlers. They know their weight down to the exact ounce. None of them looked like Tv "wrestlers".

Sad event.

How many hours? In type? Night flying? Condition of four prior to flight? Many unknowns.
