Has anyone went through the process?

I have a couple of questions. If a person has a ICAO license from another country, let’s say Commercial Instrument. They have come to the Local FSDO and received a private conversion that allows them to exercise private privileges while holding their foreign license.

The next step is to take a checkride with a DPE in order to get a full unrestricted FAA license. So in theory they can go straight to a commercial checkride, easy enough given they have all the hours, but would they also need to take an instrument checkride as well, if that’s the case I would assume they would need to take a instrument ride first and then the commercial.

I’m just having a hard time visualizing this. If they have a private conversion but it’s only valid with a foreign license, does getting the instrument checkride validate the private now or would they still need to take a private or commercial FAA checkride to upgrade to a full license?

So what I think I’m reading is the instrument rating does not follow through and that is a separate checkride regardless, if they test to the private or commercial standards. ?

There are distinct standards for the instrument (airpalne) rating. These are independent of whether you are adding it to a private or commercial certificate.
The ATP is the only certificate that has an implicit instrument component.

Where is your license from? If Canada, rules are slightly different and less restrictive than from other countries.

You have a private based on foreign cert. You can take an faa instrument checkride. Then your private foreign cert says "US TEST PASSED"

Then you take an FAA Commercial ASEL test. Then you have a clean Faa commercial that says ASEL, Instrument Airplane.
