Stratus might lose some of their market share.

Once again the big gorilla ( Garmin ) wins.

True, but I think this is Appareo's screw-up. They chose to attach themselves to only ForeFlight, including putting their firmware update into the app! They actively kept their protocol closed. I don't know how much ForeFlight's influence tied to that, but it's a huge miss on their part. They had a chance to define the industry standard for this sort of data and they chose to instead play the same game as Garmin by going proprietary. The war was lost at that moment; you do not compete with the gorilla with a frontal assault. The gorilla will tear you limb from limb, and we are beginning to see limbs.

I get your frustration with Garmin continuing to dominate when a little competition would be healthier. But I can't cry for Appareo. This isn't Garmin playing the game unfairly or even particularly well. This is Appareo having made a huge strategic miss.

At the moment, I can't think of a single reason to buy a Stratus anymore. I expect Appareo to open up compatibility now, but it may be too little, too late.

EDIT: Disclosure, I'm both a FF user and a Stratus 2 owner.

...is it a "win" for Garmin or admission of defeat in the EFB space by allowing FF into their world?

I think it is a win for pilots and Foreflight and smart for Garmin...just turned Foreflight into the 900lb Gorilla.

I've used a GDL-3D with Garmin Pilot for a couple of years and like it. I'm putting a G3X Touch in my new Cub so now I'll be able to run Garmin ADS-B on the panel AND Foreflight on my iPhone or iPad at the same time. Like I said... sweet!

Wonder if it's a software change in FF or Garmin firmware that allows this....

Just updated. Best part for me is I can now see a target's speed on foreflight, as I did with Sratus, which for some reason is not displayed on the G3X panel.

Android and Apple. Perfect analog. Google was smart enough to not try to compete with Apple by being Apple.

Under construction. Moving along nicely. My engine is bolted to the dyno at Superior right now. Constant speed Whirl Wind ships any day. All the Garmin panel parts are in hand. The big money is spent. Now I just need to finish cover and assembly. That's 6 months away and I'm not in a hurry to fly it in the dark of Alaska winter so I may delay it til spring.

Thanks. It's a fun project. This isn't my first Cub build but it is my first experimental and my first kit. There's nothing easy about building this particular kit but not having to follow certified rules makes it fun. It should be a very good performer.

What if this means the Stratus will soon give its information to Garmin Pilot app? Food for thought.

That's kinda what I was referencing at the end of my previous post. Nice for existing Stratus owners like myself, as we can now convert to Garmin Pilot or other apps without buying a new device. I don't know if it'll be a reason for someone to buy a Stratus, though, so I think Appareo has stormy seas in front of it.

I see that now. Guess I missed it the first time through. And I agree with you.
