Which format do they put on the 6+? The phone version or the iPad version? Or can you choose which one you want?

Seems like the 6+ and even the 6 would be big enough to use the iPad version of FF.

I have to ask because the iPhone 6+ is still unobtanium.

TangoWhiskey posted some images soon after he got his 6+ and it was the iPhone version.

Likely the new phone sizes and resolutions is one reason both Tyson and Hilton have been so quiet lately. They are busy improving their products to take advantage of the new hardware.

Do you guys think the 6+ is sufficient as a primary platform for FF or more of a back up solution to an iPad?? I have never used FF, but will be purchasing soon and am starting to think about my setup. thx

Whats the difference between the two? I only fly with an iPad.

Or someone big is paying lots of money to acquire Foreflight.

Definitely the phone version. I asked FF if they would consider enabling the iPAD features and they gave a non-committal brushoff.

I use FF on the 6, not the 6+ but i still wouldn't want the 6+ to be my primary chart device. IMHO, the iPad mini is as small as you'd want for regular use, with your iPhone as a backup.

Whether it's your primary is immaterial to the conversation. You can use your iPad for the primary, but that still doesn't change the fact that your iPhone 6+ probably would be nicer with the iPad version of FF on it. The FF iPhone presentation is horrendously clunky in its low resolution. The iPhone 6+ has a much higher resolution than the phones (in fact, moreso than all of the non-retina iPad).

Please, no. I remember what happened when Jeppesen bought the Mac software package from the company (sorry, can't remember the name) in the NW to get the back-end algorithms. Then it promptly announced there would be no more Mac software because there was such a small market for Mac software, it was beneath them to maintain & continue the application. And proudly proclaimed it for years.

I was flying this past weekend with friends who were in the Air Race Classic a few months ago. If anyone noticed the press release back in June, ForeFlight 'will provide each racer with a three month subscription" and was one of the sponsors.

Truly creative marketing, considering there's a number of teams/participants in the race that work for Jeppesen....

I think with a yoke mount Id be happy with the Iphone 6+. Its a bigger display and more clear then the clunky GPS unit thats installed in the plane now

iPhone 6+ sitting on mini retina 2.

Not big enough for me. No thanks.

The update that came out today mentions large screen support for the 6 and 6+. When one of you guys who have either updates, please advise if they changed to the iPad interface.

From the blog:

Optimization for iPhone 6 and 6 Plus. Compatibility with the higher resolution screens enables ForeFlight Mobile to show more information without scrolling (e.g. favorites and recents lists).

Auto-show taxi is expanded to the Maps view. When turned ON and in the Maps view, Show Taxi on Map automatically switches to the current airport taxi diagram without leaving the Maps view. This allows you to continue in Track Up mode after landing.

Improvements to airport services information.

New helper messages when filing flight plans.

Improvements for better performance on iOS 8.1.

JayBird, here are some before/after shots on the iPhone 6+ and today's update. Definitely not the iPad interface, still has the side menu. You'll notice five fields in the HUD in the map view now, more options visible in menus (smaller font).

I do like the new NOTAM and Flight Information advisor features... very cool.

Also wrote to them with an idea that I don't know is possible within iOS limitations, but if it was, would save them serious bandwidth.

Namely, if I have more than one iOS device and have my geo download settings similar, allow the devices to sync downloads... in other words, I download Texas VFR charts on the iPad and my other devices, when all are on the same WiFi network, will pull their copy from the other device (if it's available) versus the FF servers.

That would be cool.

Troy: Don't forget to switch on the Widget feature for AeroWeather.

I wonder if we'll see widgets from FF?

I don't have AeroWeather... I know about it from another pilot buddy though, who sent me a pic of the widget that updates weather / METARs for his home field... but I can already get that same detail from ForeFlight, so haven't downloaded "yet another app." I'm going to wait a bit and see if they (FF) adds any widgets for notifications.

Gotcha.

The widget concept is a nice add for iOS. Aeroweather's way of doing it is really nice. Makes it very quick to see the METAR at Denton with minimal tapping/clicking/swiping.

I really have no issues using the 5s as my "primary" Foreflight platform. I prefer the Ipad but there are times when I ride my bike to the airport and don't want to lug an Ipad with me.

Want.

I'm on a 5Mb/sec pipe. I loathe updating the same files on three devices.

People are spoiled with big bandwidth and "the cloud".

So I kick off all three devices simultaneously on my 100 Mb/s pipe at work and let them beat the snot out of FF's download servers.

They said in their reply to me that they get LOTS of requests for "peer sharing of downloads"... So maybe we'll see it some day.

Pretty sure they are using Amazon Cloudfront for this. Not even a blip on their servers. ... ;)

I didn't say it actually bothered their servers, just that I don't care. If I had a 10Gb pipe I'd gladly use it.

Wouldn't matter much, even the newer iPad spends more time "processing" the downloaded file than actually downloading it on 100 Mb/s. It's CPU limited, more than download speed limited.
