I downloaded the “Missouri radio online” app on my cell phone last week so I could occasionally listen to KDHX 88.1, a St. Louis listener supported station (that plays a lot of eclectic and local music) that we listen to occasionally when we’re in STL.

In the “Missouri radio online” app list of stations was also “St. Louis Classic Rock”. That’s all it says, no “call letters” or frequency. So, apparently this is an internet streaming station only. IT’S GREAT,check it out. A LOT of deep cuts from bands you know and some you probably won’t.

When I’m listening to it on the computer that I have hooked up to my stereo (via their normal website, link below), the band and song are listed. When listening to it while driving down the road on my phone using the “Missouri radio online” app there is no clue what you are listening to…a drawback IMO...because I WANT to know!

I THINK it’s a service of K-SHE (by looking at where they’re located) but don’t know for sure…it’s one helluva lot better than K-SHE is these days, that’s for sure. K-SHE pretty much sucks, and is stuck on late 70’s and early 80's ****.

Anyway, check it out:

Oh, and I’ve heard one commercial in probably 24 hours of listening thus far so I have no idea how they're making a living off of it.

As did I. It was a great station! Always in the top 5 list of Rolling Stones best progressive rock stations in the US. It was usually a tight race 'twixt KSHE and an LA station for the top spot.

But today, KSHE is just another PoS "classic rock" station that plays all the tunes that have been sooooooo overplayed over the years. Tunes that were good...the first million times you heard them. They suck.

There is a LOT of good music out there that I've heard just a couple of times in my life, or never. That's the kind of stuff at this online station is playing, I love it...thus far...we'll see how diverse their collection is. That'll be the key.

How come "real" rock is always um "old" rock?

Oh, it's not! I like a lot of newer stuff also.

My definition of "real rock" is stuff that hasn't been played a Brazilian* times by the local radio stations. It can be far newer than the 60s and early 70s and some (albeit very little thus far) of what this station plays is newer.

The 60s and early 70s music is well "before my generation" but I think what sets it apart from what came later is $$$$$$. Back then it was still about the music, about the art, about the craft, about the message and not about the money. Hell, Clapton left the Yardbirds because he didn't like that the producers were pushing them to crank out music that would be more popular (commercial) and get more airtime. He thought they were stifling his creativity. I can't see Steve Perry or Johnny Edwards or Gene Simmons or even Ronnie Van Zant b!tching to a producer that was pushing them to make more money because, by then, it was all about the money. The craft was secondary.

Of course, the drugs of the day helped too! :)

Some of the best concerts I never saw were free in a park somewhere. Here's an example:

Blind Faith in Hyde Park, 1969

Enjoy!

I always thought Kiss was the WWF of music.

The current KSHE is what you get when you rely on call-out research, data mining, and demands for maximum profitability. Watch out, internet, it's headed your way!
