Hey guys, I just thought I'd follow up with everyone on my status with my PPL. I had posted this a few weeks back after my first time flying in ~10 years:

All of you guys advice was amazing.

To refresh, I had about 24 hours logged from training years ago, and had a few solo hours. Had a scary experience and quit, now I'm trying to overcome some apprehension (i.e. moments of sheer terror) and get back into it.

Unfortunately I've had a really rough time getting anything scheduled with my CFI. He's only available mon, tues, and thurs nights, and once you factor in weather, it just makes it really difficult. so in 3 weeks, we only went up once. I decided it would be best to start looking for other alternatives.

I found a flight school out of Smyrna (MQY), which is a haul for me, but hopefully will be worth it. I just went up yesterday with my new CFI, and I couldn't believe how different it was. He has 15,000 hours and is a retired airline pilot. It was like night and day from what I had previously experienced. He was super involved, and talked me through every maneuver. He was hard on me when I'd screw it up, but I think he'll make me a better/safer pilot. I could tell it was probably very frustrating to him to be such an experienced pilot in complex aircraft, and here's this guy who can't even get the simplest things right in a 172. I was still terrified, but i think that was more because he was pushing me to my limits. He had me doing the radio calls and everything, which I totally botched every single time.

One thing we did that I'm fairly certain I never did in my previous training was steep turns (45 degrees). I know I did 30 degree turns in the past, but I'm fairly certain I never did steep turns. All of this experience with different CFI's is making me realize just how much the right teacher can make or break you.

Anyway, there's no real question or purpose for this post other than to try and get involved in this awesome community! Thanks for listening!

Congratulations Jon. You got back on the horse, good for you. I would go at it as if you were a brand new student, and listen carefully to your CFI. He sounds like a great teacher with a lot of experience.

I read about your close call, and can understand why you are somewhat reluctant but I think you will be very pleased with yourself when you eventually get your PPL.

I started training again after a 35 years and am pleased with my instructor, and my progress so far. (13 total hours) The radio is my weakest part, but my instructor forced me to do all the communicating yesterday, and I think eventually it will become second nature. I fly out of class C, KISP on Long Island, and it can get a little intimidating with 737's, and 5 or 6 guys in the pattern.

Good luck.
