My wife asked the silliest question the other day. "What do you think your budget for flying every month should be?"

Uh. All of it?

how about: part of our flying budget.

Pay for the necessities, the rest is allocated for flying.

I flip this on its end. My wife and I have an agreement. I fly. She pays bills and can spend whatever is left any way she wants.

So far, we've both been pretty happy.

NEVER EVER under ANY circumstances divide $ spent by hours flown.
That information will scare the bejeezus out of you, and as any sane, security minded pilot knows, If you write it down, someone WILL find it.

I am new to this, from what I have been able to learn, flying and budget are two words that dont seem to go together.
