Well, the date is set. April 19 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. We're having a fly-in at Lake Texoma Jet Center ( www.texomajet.com ) at KGYI (North Texas Regional Airport at Perrin Field, formerly Grayson County Airport), about 50 miles north of Dallas and just south of Lake Texoma on the Texas/Oklahoma border. We have a 9,000 foot runway with full ILS and acres of concrete ramp. Lots of room!

Patsy's is bringing the food for $10 a head--real country cooking! We'll have baked chicken, delicious moist meatloaf, all the fixin's, and top it off with Hummingbird cake and lemonade!

I'm inviting all the local flying clubs, flight schools, type clubs, aircraft sales guys, aviation related vendors, etc. We'll have a bunch of Lears on the ramp and maybe a Falcon or two. If I can work it out, I'll try to have an Lear engine on our test cell to shake the earth a bit.

Maybe we'll invite the Mustang car club. Or the Corvette club. Or ????

Invite your friends! If you're a vendor, send me an email and I'll get you set up with a table to spread out your wares. No charge.

And we'll be offering a steep discount on fuel for all attendees.

Mark your calendars!

Any of you who are in Texas or an adjoining state, could you help me out? I've created a flyer for our fly-in and linked it to our website. I'd appreciate it if you could print it out and post it at your local fbo.

Today DTC DUAT agreed to come demo their wares and talk to pilots about on-line flight planning. With the changes to FSS, this is a very timely topic.

We also bribed the local CAF wing into bringing a vintage aircraft to exhibit (in exchange for a couple of hundred gallons of avgas--probably less than it will burn on the hop to here and back)!

We have lots of other people coming and contributing to the atmosphere. I believe we're even going to be hosting an air race here that day. Stay tuned to our website, where we'll continue to post updates as they happen http://www.texomajet.com/flyin.htm

Maybe I need to change my deodorant. Maybe no one from north Texas frequents this board. Maybe pilots don't care about fly-ins? There were over 40 responses to the post on the Red Board, but not a single one here. Did I say something wrong???

Naw, Steve. I think I responded over there, and it might also be because many of the folks here, are also there. If I were not so lazy, I'd go there and make an inventory of PoA members who responded there.

If I am in town, I absolutely, positively intend to bring my V-Tailed glory to visit!
And while I haven't the faintest clue what Hummingbird Pie is, I bet I'll like it.

Edit:

You may smell, too... but I would not know!

Oh, you'll like it! It's particularly tasty because hummingbirds are so rare this time of year (eeeewwwwwww.....)

I'm hitting the road now on my motorcycle, teaming up with another pilot/biker and we'll be there about 11.

My first whirly-bird ride!

Well, that was FUN!

My biker/pilot friend Barry and I rode our motorcycles two hours north-northeast to Sherman (Grayson County airport). Steve put on a very nice event. There were lots of planes, but not too many--just right. Just enough to get a sunburn! :-)

First thing I noticed when I arrived was Steve See's IAR on the ramp! We wandered over and chatted with him for a bit--he had a nice 3 hour flight in that morning. The weather was sunny (80 or so) and clear today.

Spike flew in with Tommy, as well.

What's REALLY COOL is that Barry and I both got our first helicopter rides!

I rode in a Hughes 269C, and Barry in a Hiller. The Hughes pilot, when he found out I was a pilot, asked if I wanted to see how an autorotation works, so that's how my flight ended--with an autorotation back to the field. What a thrill that flight was. You should have seen the grin on my face! I got my "RV-Grin" in a Hughes!

He did a high-speed pass down a nearby grass strip, pulled up high-G into a hover 300' above the ground, we stayed there for a minute, then came down to near-tree-top level and flew back to the airport before coming back to altitude for the auto-rotation. The Hughes had the doors off on this 80-degree day, so that was cool, too... man, the visibility in that bubble cockpit was amazing.

Here's a picture of the one I flew in:

We left Sherman/Dennison and rode out to Cedar Mills, a grass strip at the marina on Lake Texoma. Saw a polished aluminum Cessna 180 flying overhead in the pattern, but he didn't land. An RV-7A did, however, and we visited with the pilot and his wife for a few minutes before pointing the bikes south to Gainesville for some lunch (we intended to eat at the fly-in, as Steve had organized good food, but we spent our cash on the helicopter ride!).

In Gainesville, we found a couple of black gentlemen standing outside their auto repair garage, and pulled up to ask them where the best BBQ in town was. That's a trick somebody told me some time ago, and it's never failed to get me the best food and best values in small towns, and helps me avoid chain restaurants--the locals know where to go!! They pointed us to Dieter Brothers on US-81, out by Gainesville Airport. Turns out that it's a popular use of the courtesy car at KGLE, per the comments on Airnav.

Headed south on FM (farm to market) rural roads and got home about 5pm, having left the house at 9am.

What a GREAT DAY!!!

I was impressed with the turnout. We landed after the air race started and before it ended so we didn't have much traffic to contend with when arriving. It was a beautiful day for flying, we even gave the tower at MLU a fly-by on the way over that morning.

After making a GFA claim at KGYI, we headed over to a friend's hangar at 7T0. Kathleen got to ride over in an L-19 Birddog, and then got a couple of hops in a MA5 Charger biplane and an RV-8. Even the IAR found a big brother on the ramp at KGYI so it didn't feel so bad being an outsider. :)

Thanks, SW, a good time was had by all!

It was good fun, let there be no doubt. Tommy, after having to be dragged into going, had a blast, as we took a ride in a fling-wing.

Seeing Steve and Kathleen was definitely an unexpected bonus! Oh, and Troy was there too...

Ah, man, I saw Steve, and Spike, and Tommy, but totally missed seeing Kathleen, even though I was at Steve's plane for a good 15 minutes... where was she hiding out?!?

I think she was scoping out the food hangar at the time. The in-flight meal was rather scant on the trip over.... or maybe it was the air race ground crew of college guys that had come down from Southeastern Oklahoma State Univ. in Durant, OK... ;)
