It's a lameness filter. Don't want ya SHOUTING.

If you surround the pasted text with [ QUOTE ] [ /QUOTE ] it doesn't get messed with.

An hour in the pattern there should improve your xwind skills a bit...

Probably trying to ferry yachts out of the area!! Wants to get on TV again.

With 45 ft seas, I hope they're big boats!

Remember last year when CNN caught him docking that 55 footer (or so) near Palm Beach during Hurricane Charley?

Remember the pictures of it afterward?
Both props were curled, lots of nasty looking gouges on the bow, running OEI without hydraulic steering and bow thruster out.

He did a great job. Boat survived and no one got hurt.

Henning can have the emergency set of keys to any boat I ever own.

Uh oh, I have a geek moment coming on!

What is the maximum theoretical crosswind component for a typical GA single? Crabs (ie shortest, widest runway) notwithstanding. Assuming infinite rudder authority, zero lift from the fuselage (no knife-edge slips), standard descent angle, and landing gear long enough (or wings short/high enough) to allow for a sufficiently high bank angle without striking a wingtip.

Second question: Assuming normal landing gear, what would the max be and would it be possible to control after touchdown?

Third, not-quite-related question: Assuming an M20J or other single capable of >150kt cruise speeds with a direct 120kt headwind... You could theoretically, assuming you got in the plane and on the runway prior to the wind, fly the entire pattern facing almost the same direction and land backwards! :goofy: Say you're on Runway 36. You could do a vertical takeoff by rotating at 120KIAS, do a cruise climb at 105KIAS (negative forward groundspeed!), turn right a few degrees for your "crosswind", accelerate to high-speed cruise for downwind, slow and turn a few degrees left for base, then slow further for your final. It would be possible to land going forward, vertically, or even in reverse! :hairraise: You could also do a runway-centerline pattern, eliminating the crosswind and base legs, and do touch and goes backwards! The question is, do backwards landings count for currency? :goofy: :D

News reports said Gasoline futures went up another 44 cents/gallon today. 20%. That's nearly 30% in two days. Local service stations here went up 15 cents today alone.

Woe is us.

Kent:

You need to get some rotary wing time; we did lots of that kind of stuff (in much tamer winds). It ain't the wind that's the issue; it's Dorothy's House and stuff like that cruisin round in it!!

Best,

Dave

Uh oh!

#1 is almost in the same category as the classic running a redlight fast enough for it to appear green and sorting out how far the wreckage slides in a broadside collision on an infinite surface with the car going through the real green light (excluding the two hubcaps on the impact side obviously because they're just not going to stay on no way no how)

Just land sideways and not worry about it.

#2 See practical solution to #1

#3 Sounds dangerous, you go first. :p That should probably count for currency. You can definitely use the houses and such sailing by for see and avoid practice.

3A: How many violations will the FSDO smack you in the head with after you back into a stationary object while doing #3

Hmmm. I may try #3 on MSFS tonight just for fun.

I would have pulled over earlier but I couldn't see the lights or hear the sirens."

Only if you live through them.

I knew a guy that used to take a Cub, go over to the towered airport during high winds, and bring it down to just above a stall a few feet above the runway. He knew the controller pretty well as he flew traffic watch for the local radio stations.
