Do only IFR aircraft show up in Flightaware? I figure the only way it can happen is with a flight plan and squawk code, not simply flight following nor VFR flight plan. Is that right?

You have to go into your account on the web version, go into settings, and turn on "position only flights" if you want to see non flight plan flights.

You can also see any ADS-B out equipped aircraft if you select "position only" flights. VFR aircraft on flight following only works some of the time.

Flight Aware will show "flight following only" aircraft. However, it really depends on how the flight is put into the system. In a nutshell, I don't think short flights with no hand offs will show up, but longer cross country flights will. Whether or not an aircraft has a VFR flight plan makes no difference.

Flightaware uses ADS-B to record your flight. Has nothing to do with a flight plan or flight following.

That's not exactly true. The traditional FlightAware data source is the FAA flight information system which does need both some sort of plan as well as radar services (either IFR or VFR).

FlightAware has also developed a separate system of crowd placed ADSB listeners that listen to the ADSB out from aircraft.

My aircraft is all over flightaware and I have no ADSB (yet).

Not quite true. Flightaware receives their data from the FAA as the ASDI (Aircraft Situation Display to Industry) program. ADS-B is only used if the aircraft is a feeder that provides their data for it.

I've flown many airplanes that are not equipped with ADS-B in or out and the data still appears on FA. ADS-B has nothing to do with sending tracking information, although it certainly improves the quality if you're equipped.

Again this is incorrect. Other apps are ADSB only, like flightradar24. Flightaware on the other hand gets flight plan info. And data from faa radar.
