Does anyone know what triggers flightaware.com to pick you up when you don't file a flight plan but pick up FF?

I flew up to KGTU to KLBB on Friday and picked up FF during the climb out and it shows up on flightaware. However, the trip home departing from the KLBB Class C and getting FF from the get-go doesn't show up?

Anyone know what triggers getting picked up and when you do is real-time or close to real-time?

While others will likely chime in with greater detail, the short answer is that not all VFR flights (including those on FF) show up in the system.

One thing that seems to help flights show is if they're not on a local beacon (squawk) code. In other words, if your squawk starts with 01, 02, 03..your flight wasn't set up in the ARTCC computer as one likely to require handoffs, and therefore your flight info isn't forwarded to the national system.

The controller will sometimes enter you into the system ,if you are on flight following. The blue line is the filed route, the green the actual flight route.

If you cross a center boundary line (handoff) you'll probably end up on Flightaware. You can also request it, but I forgot the "official" secret ATC lingo to force it to show up.

No idea. I got picked up on my trip home yesterday but not the flight out

What is the blue dashed line running alongside the solid green line?
On another of my flights, the blue dashed line is the whole way but the green line only for a portion.

I think the blue dashed line is estimated. This shows up for me once I get to an area where they have to release me because of radar coverage. However, I've never see it parallel with the green.

The one pattern I've noticed is every time I've originated with SAT departure, it shows up on flightaware. Coming home it seems to be hit and miss.
