I spent this past fall semester studying abroad in Rome, so I've been understandably antsy to get back in the air.
I finally had the opportunity over the past two weeks to go out and regain my currency. The weather this morning was pretty bad, but by about 2000Z it cleared up quite nicely. The weather was moving eastward, so my first choice fly in restaurant (KFKL) wasn't an option. Many rave over the on-field restaurant at MFD, so I decided to head over there.
I haven't done much flying to the west of my home base, LNN, because of the CLE class B. Skirting it to the south is somewhat difficult because of tall towers beneath the outer ring. I plotted a route that kept me out from under the class B until I was well south of the towers.
I arrived at the airport. It turns out that the plane I had reserved had moved to Illinois. Two of the three other 172s on the line were being taken out, and the third had a brand new engine. Maintenance had enough confidence in my 125 hours of PP time to let me start the break-in process on their new engine. A 172 at full throttle will break 120kts in level flight pretty easily.
Getting around the Bravo was easier than I could have imagined. MFD Tower cleared me to land while I was still 10 miles out, and Flyboys bar & grill was gracious enough to seat us even though we landed about 15 minutes before closing.
On the way out I decided to get flight following and try to cut through the Bravo. Neither MFD Approach nor CLE Approach could read my transponder. I seem to have bad luck with them, I'd say half the time approach can't read the transponder. Thankfully CLE Approach wasn't to busy and let me cut through based on my primary return. I caught the beacon from Lost Nation (LNN) from nearly 25 miles out. I cancelled Flight Following about 7 miles from the airport, then threw in a pretty hefty slip to bring the plane from 3500ft and 120kts to 1600ft and 80kts in time to intercept the guide slope.
Lessons Learned: More often than not, CLE Approach will let you through the Bravo.
I used to think my radio work was pretty good, but getting back in the air I realized that while my phraseology isn't bad, I take too much time to say it, at least compared to the rest of the traffic talking to CLE Approach.
Totals: 1.8hrs, .5day/1.3night. 2 night landings, one night takeoff.
Try the Flyboy Burger.
