A friend and I will be making a x-country as a flight of two aircraft that will necessitate transiting Class C airspace. What is ATC procedure for a flight of two going through Class C airspace? After the lead plane makes the call-up, is each plane given a squawk code, does the controller give clearance and instructions to each plane or just the lead airplane? Would it be simpler for each aircraft to call Approach individually?

Depends on how far apart you are. If you’re within standard (100 ft vert and 1 mile), then lead will get the squawk. Lead calls ATC “XYX approach, Cessna 12345 is a flight of 2 C172s...” No clearance required, just comms. Easier on the controller for one to call vs two.

Yes, as long as you are in a reasonable formation, only the lead squawks & talks. Dash-2 Just follows along on the frequencies, with a quick “two” on check in.

You may be in need of a cool formation callsign for the flight?

Just check in and the controller will inform you what they want. Ain’t no big deal.

Thank you all for the replies.
