With better results!
I hadn't flown in a couple of months, so I flew up to OSH to stretch my wings. At OSH 9 times out of 10 I am landing on 9/27, but winds were at 150 yesterday, and I was given the left downwind for runway 18.
I received my landing clearance as "Turn base south of 9/27, cleared for the option 18". With all my trips up there I've never flown that, but I know that's a possibility when flying into AirVenture, and was glad to do it.
I also know that's the one where Jack Roush screwed the pooch.
It was a fun approach, but definitely shorter final than anything I've done except for practicing engine out approaches, which I do often. I put in 30 degrees of flaps on base (usually do that on final only), and it felt odd to be maneuvering so close to the ground.
Yes it's a long runway, and I could have made a "normal" approach, but I wanted to simulate what I could be asked to do coming in to AirVenture. I was able easily land by the blue dot.
I couldn't imagine even trying to do that in a swept wing jet - what was he thinking?
