Pre-Flight
I've been lurking on these boards for a while but have been nervous or shy to really contribute. I appreciate the stories and experiences you all share, as well as all the constructive feedback of this community. In the end we all share a common bond, the love of flight.
This flight has taken place after 21 hours of instruction. I've been on an aggressive schedule (started taking lessons about 1 month ago). I try to get up 3-5 times per week and continue to build on the last flights lessons.

My first attempted landing, I wasn't happy with my approach. I was coming in high, and had a little more airspeed than I wanted and when i did my transition I ballooned slightly and at that moment i decided to just do a go-around. KPIE runway 36R is a very long runway servicing UPS Cargo jets, 737's and a C130 coast guard plane.
The next subsequent landings felt a lot better. One thing, among many items, i need to work on is I seem to consistantly come into final too high. I'm definately needing to work on starting my intiial decent sooner in my pattern. My transition is feeling a lot better as I've learned to not fixate so close to the nose, looking a little further down the runway has given me a much better sense of altitude.
KPIE is a busy delta-class airport, https://skyvector.com/airport/PIE/St-Pete-Clearwater-International-Airport / https://skyvector.com/files/tpp/1505/pdf/00625AD.PDF (My takeoffs where from Golf at runway 36R with right-hand traffic over the Tampa Bay)
My instructor and my wife where both watching and overall they felt like things went well.
I'll be transitioning to prepare for cross-country work over the next week. My instructor suggested i take one afternoon and enjoy flying around the islands on the gulf coastline near Tampa and enjoy the accomplishment of solo the endorsement
Through the process a few observations about myself: multiple times along the way i really felt like this might not be for me. I struggled with my initial landings, heavily. Transitions where always off, I would "drop in" land, baloon, float because my airspeed was too high, not manage the crosswind transition properly. I seemed to make the same mistakes over and over.
I'm not sure at what point it "clicked" with the landings. Reading chapter 8 of the FAA book Airplane Flying Handbook probably did more for me than anything, in that it described in great detail the different scenerios of a botched landing and how to prevent it from happening.
Thanks for reading this and safe flying!
