This very old video is interesting by itself, however it claims that the crash depicted was the start of standardized IAPs (instead of airline-designed, or pilot-invented approaches)… and perhaps also more widespread terminal radar.
Anyone know the full history on these developments?

 
Maybe in Belgium, but the CAA was designing approaches in the US since the 40's.
 
Can you imagine flying a -4, hours across the Atlantic when it was not commonplace yet, down low in the weather, then trying to land in the Gander fog with few outs? Seems way beyond our current personal or company limits.
