First Instrument Panel

What was the first panel that you first flew under the hood?

1. Was it a panel that had a watch hanging by a string in the center to tell which way the plane was leaning?

2. Was it a panel with a "Turn and Bank, Wiskey Compass, Airspeed and and Kollman Altimeter? Maybe an option of a Hallicrafters receiver and better yet a Narco Super Homer.

3. Or was it a panel full of steam guages and radios to keep your feet warm in the winter?

4 Or finally a panel that is a wide screen movie with an auto pilot that does everything except make coffee with surgar and cream?

The one I saw under the hood was panel number 2 in a PA 12 Did I learn about timed turns with that turn and bank.

Sorry I know I can't do the poll thing yet so this a home made poll. Us older pilots need some key board help.

Did my private pilot hood requirements in a Grumman AA1B. Standard six pack with an Escort 110 as the only radio.

Did my instrument rating in a late 70's Piper PA28 161 Warrior. Standard six pack, dual KX170s and a KR86 ADF. No autopilot, no DME and no intercom. Used a hood that precluded using a headset. Used foggles, portable intercom and headset for the checkride. Thought I died and went to heaven.

First time under the hood was in a 152 II with the 6 pack. Single radio, single VOR, no other nave equipment.

Did some of my IR training in a 172 with the standard layout. No GPS, dual VORs and an ADF. Finished my IR in a Warrior with dual VORs and a standard panel Dont remember the radios in either one.

Re: First Instrument Panel

First hood time was in 1969 in a late 60's C-150 with standard-T instruments and a 90-channel Cessna ARC nav/com.

First panel was in the T-41 Mescalero. Next was the Cessna T-37 with a panel that I am sure they put together just to confuse students. Nothing like having to look down under the panel to change the radios. Jason

Depends on what you mean by "flew under the hood". My first exposure would have been in one of the 150/152s I did my PPL training in. They had a single ARC navcom and the basic six pack. My first instrument lesson was in a Cardinal RG with the typical dual KX-170 navcoms and a simple autopilot (that we didn't ever turn on) and steam gauges. I finished my IR training in an old Bonanza that started with a ribbon DG and one good Collins navcom, an Arnav LORAN, and a crummy Genave backup navcom. Somewhere along the line I replaced the old DG with a new one that had a heading bug and added a DME and an STEC autopilot. I'm pretty sure the Bonanza upgrades were completed before I took my first post-checkride instrument flight.

Panel 3 in a 172SP. It may have had a KMD550 MFD. Definitely autopilot, KLN94, dual VORs, etc.

panel 3---standard 6 pack in a piper warrior. Have some time in panel 4 too. I do wish they'd install a coffee maker

Panel 3 in 172N and (occasionally) Warrior; basic King IFR and no GPS (IFR).

Yes, I learned NDB approaches.
