Hello!
I am working on my packet and hoping to get a First Class medical. I am looking for some guidance from people who know or have been through the process.
I recently had a consultation with a HIMS AME. Before my appointment, I took my time gathering as many records as I could because I like to be prepared and be efficient with time. I disclosed that I had recently taken Dexedrine (10mg) and Zoloft (5–10mg) for about eleven months and have not taken since 05/2026. I am still seeing my psychiatrist for post-medication monitoring.
I let him know about my history of depression and ADHD from 2013-2016, for which I have records.
The HIMS AME told me I needed to wait six months before submitting and referred me to a HIMS psychiatrist. I specifically asked whether I needed to see anyone else, and he said I only needed the HIMS psychiatrist.
The appointment with the HIMS AME was scheduled as a consultation. However, during the appointment, the AME apparently treated it as a HIMS initial without clearly explaining that to me beforehand. The appointment was very brief, didn’t review what I brought and I was asked just a handful of questions. Secretary scanned my documents and I left with some uncertainty.
After speaking with the psychiatrist I was referred to, I contacted the office regarding the CogScreen the psychiatrist said I needed before my appointment. There seemed to be some confusion about my history and the office appeared to be working off only one of the diagnoses I had disclosed, and I had to clarify the others and medication history through various phone calls and several back and forth conversations with the secretary and AME. At this point, my confidence in the process isn’t great. Not that I believe the AME is wrong, more that the process feels disorganized. Knowing how costly and arduous the process can be, I’m hesitant to schedule anything further given my experience so far.
Is it usual for an AME to handle an initial this way? Should I seek a second opinion before proceeding? I am trying to make sure I have the right people guiding me through the process before I spend thousands of dollars on evaluations. Any experiences or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
