First class medical with two DUI’s

Had I known this from the beginning, I definitely would have, but I was new to all of this and didn’t know how long it would have taken. But my question was, will it be another 8-9 month wait again or will it be shorter? OKC now has my HIMS AME’s report and 7 months of negative urine tests.

@bbchein did you see my response and question?

If one was good at medicine would they not be practicing it vs being adjunct staff at a state school?

Seems a AME who also teaches is not remotely practicing medicine as much as heavily in “administration”

Most of administration is legal, which is not what any person who got a MD DO etc was trained in, seems wiser to use a lawyer who can sub out to the AMEs etc he finds better suited to his clients goals
like I said, how many folks here have you ACTUALLY HELPED?

Got no need to prove anything. 25,000 anesthetics. Put the beer down.

UPDATE:

After 12 months of waiting, I logged into medexpress today and I saw a green check. My first class medical was approved!! Thank you to everyone who offered me guidance during this process. If you’re in the same boat, just wait and be patient. It’ll pay off!

Why do I somehow think that's related to your congressman's inquiry......
Does it really help? Honestly?

I made an inquiry to mine, hoping it would, and response was basically we’re backlogged, applicant’s case is complex due to blah, blah, blah and it will be a while.

That’s was a few months ago.

I know things are moving forward, just crazy it’s been 2.5 years since I started this journey.

Happy for the OP though!!

I didn’t make a congressional inquiry this time. I submitted one in December 2024 when I was waiting to hear something. But I finally got a letter in March 2025. After that letter, I never submitted another congressional inquiry. My HIMS AME uploaded his report around the middle of April.

I hate that it’s taking yours so long. Hoping it’s not much longer. Stay persistent and you’ll get there!

Question for those who were deferred and received their medical. I’m waiting for my paper copy to arrive in the mail. I have gotten my first class medical emailed to me already. Is there a way to tell if it’s unrestricted or SI just from what you can see in medexpress or from the copy emailed to you? The only limitation I see is that I’m required to wear contact lenses at all times.

if there is no "not valid for any class after" sentence in the middle box, you got an "eligility letter" with no future requriements other than to STAY CLEAN.

I want to post a timeline of how the deferral process went for me so that it may help others in the future.

Early May 2024: applied for first class medical and was deferred for 2 past DUI’s.

Late May 2024: received a letter from OKC requesting a document. Sent it in a week later.

June 2024: application went into “in review” and stayed there until March 2025.

September 2024: decided to be a little proactive and met with a HIMS AME and started random monthly alcohol screenings.

March 2025: received a letter from OKC requesting that I meet with a HIMS AME for their opinion on my past and present drinking habits.

April 2025: my HIMS AME sent in his packet and report on me via huddle which included 7 negative alcohol screenings.

May 2025: received my Unrestricted First Class medical.

So, my entire process took exactly 1 year from start to finish. Several people, including a few HIMS AME’s recommended that I get the HIMS psychiatric evaluation, attend weekly AA meetings, possible treatment, and to expect a 24-48 hour alcohol screening from OKC.

I made the decision to not do any of the above unless OKC required it of me. I did, however, choose to do the random monthly alcohol screenings. Those are all I did and OKC never requested anything else from me.

My advice if you are deferred, do your research and make the best decision based on your situation and goals. Also, make sure to send everything you have and comply with everything they ask of you and you’ll make it through.

Happy flying everyone!
