Poor Azure who is going to HATE me for posting this as he is trapped in Michigan craving an ice-free IFR day!

Here is a 5 min edited video I made of the best parts of the flight.

Go easy on me, as I am new to video editing and probably have made some rookie mistakes in post editing:) Sorry that there is no sound here, but I totally forgot to turn on my external microphone---I was kicking myself afterwards!!

Finally after almost 4 months of either CAVU, ice or just blaze weather, I finally got the chance again to fly in ceilings ranging from 1600' all the way down to below ILS minimums on Tuesday night.

Not only that, but what I saw that night was no doubt some of the Mother Nature's best scenery between layers and later on top of everything right as the sun was setting the last 20 minutes of the flight.

Sharply after getting released from prison......ohhh............I meant work, I make a beeline for Barnes (BAF) and since one of the CFII's up there will be riding along (as a pax, not giving me dual), have him do the preflight, etc so we are ready to go right away. I get up there at 5:50 and have all the charts, camera, kneeboard ready to roll.

I file to Worcester (ORH) and back and am cleared direct SPENO which is the IAF for the ILS 11 at ORH. We depart runway 2 at BAF midfield and enter the clag around 1500--give or take.

Right away we are given a 050 heading and then right at 3200' we break out between laters with just a thin high later above.

Not long after we are given direct SPENO on course and assigned 4000 as our final altitude----perfect for being right above the undercast!!

Since doing a hold will push my currency exp back 60 days, I ask to told as published at RILOC---the FAF for the ILS 11 and they are happy to accomodate me. Being 800' above the deck (less than 1000) its kind of a grey area in my mind if I can log the hold without being under the hood (please dont hijack this thread :)) so just to be squeaky clean legal I ask the CFII to be safety pilot while I do 2 laps.

Having everything set up for the app before, BDL clears me for it and down we go over RILOC inbound into the abyss.

As we are about 1000' above minimums, it gets ominously dark, which is a funky feeling no matter how many times you fly an approach, but its a pretty cool thing too. At that point we have continious light to moderate chop all the way down at it takes A LOT of mental bandwidth for me to keep everything centered on an approach that low while keeping my scan up! I swear, I was most definitly at my very best in the weeks after my IR checkride!!!

Still, I keep the LOC within 1/3rd and the GS between center and 1/2 def high. Not too shabby I guess, but a helluva lot of work in such low ceilings and turbulence----which is rare as most LIFR approaches to minimums are very smooth most of the time.

At 200' I can just BARELY see one or two of the rabbit lights so its a no brainer to go missed. At that point we are shipped back to BDL and assigned hdg 190 and 4000'. At 3500' we are on top of most everything again and head back to BAF full stop.

A little while later, it looks like the tops of the higher layer are within reach, but when I am approved for 8000 to try to top it, it becomes clear that at 7300' it is too high to get to so I ask to go back to 4000 which BDL accomodates.

Once at 4000, I ask for and am given a block from 3 to 4 so I can skim the tops of the lower layer. According to my 396, sunset it just 10 min away so the timing could not have been better. For at least 10 minutes on a 290 hdg (right into the sun) cloud surf and duck about 100’ below the tops and then rise up about 100’ above the layer back and forth many times!! This is the best thing since sliced bread as it just so happens to be set up where I can have the sun set, then rise then set again with the pull or push of the yoke as I duck above and below the deck!

A few minutes later we are given a 200 heading as we are vectored for the approach and they want us back up at 4000. Right then and there off to the right, I see a site that I have never seen before. The sun just peeks through the smallest hole in the cloud layer off in the distance. Course that only lasts a minute or two and then it goes to bed.

The rest of the flight is uneventful as we are vectored for the VOR 2 into BAF.

We break out around 1800’ and make a practice shortfield landing and then taxi back and put her to bed.

Man what fun that was!!!!!!!!!
